Tallmadge Talk
November, 2021
Message from Mrs. Walker
As you know, our guidelines for masks has changed. Students and staff may still choose to wear a mask but they are not required unless they are under quarantine from a school exposure. This information will be given to you if there is an at school exposure. Tallmadge students are the best! We all want to be in school with each other. We want in person learning and we want everyone to be safe and healthy.
The holidays will be coming up fast. I shared information below for anyone that may be in need. Please share with anyone that you think may need the help.
We will have SPIRIT DAYS every Friday unless we are not in school on Friday and in this case we will celebrate on Thursday. In the Events section, I will list the dates and what the Spirit Day will be. Students chose in their classrooms what they wanted to do and we added their ideas throughout the year on the calendar. We are also adding Leadership groups to our building. Students will need to complete the paperwork application and return to the committee.
Tallmadge needs to build our PTO. Please call and talk with me if you would be willing to be a member of the PTO. We need your ideas, guidance, and support. We are a team and no one person can do all of the work. Together, we can do great things for our Tallmadge students.

Technology Tips
Please talk to your students about the importance of typing as a tech skill. We have been working on typing - and will continue to do so - regularly this school year and in previous years as well, but the students don't seem to realize just how critical typing is in today's world. We don't expect them to be expert typers or anything like that of course, but much if their testing - especially in the higher level elementary grades, and definitely going into junior high and high school - requires decent proficiency in typing skills. Some of the students do very well with this, but it never hurts to practice more! Having their parents/guardians and other family members reinforce just how important typing is would go a long way in helping them understand this concept. Very few jobs in today's world don't require at least a minimum knowledge of keyboarding skills, and most jobs require daily usage in varying amounts. If we work together to reinforce the nature of keyboarding and the vital role it plays both educationally and vocationally in the modern era, we would be serving these young minds well!
Mr. Allison

Curriculum News
Here at Tallmadge Elementary early literacy is a core focus during our instructional day. We implement a phonological awareness program in all k-2 classrooms called Heggerty and additional resources for students in older grades. We also use a systematic approach to teaching reading and spelling through various programs and strategies. Students are encouraged to practice the skills they learn at home. We put together early literacy kits for students in grade k-2 during the 2020-2021 school year and sent them home to all students. This means all students in grade 1-3 should have those kits. This year we provided kits to all our kindergarten students during the open house. These kits have materials you can use to help your child practice spelling and other skills. If you are looking for ideas or an introduction on how to use the kit, please check out our Tallmadge Literacy Help for Parents site. If you have a child in grades k-3 please reach out to your child's teacher and we will provide one to you.
