MHS Counseling

June 2021

Counseling Department Changes - We are growing to a team of 5!

Goodbye from Ms. Guzmán

"It has been very rewarding for me to work at McDaniel the past six school years, and to work with so many great students, families and staff. I will be moving out of state to be closer to family. Congrats to the 2021 Grads! To those of you who will be graduating in the next three years I wish you all the best in your future. Until our paths cross again."

Welcome Tracy Morrison

Ms. Morrison will be joining the McDaniel counseling team next year. Here are a few things about her:

"I live in Portland with my partner & 2 kids. We spend summers exploring as much as possible. I love to read, watch my kids play and find new places to enjoy nature. I have lived all over the west coast and have found a home here in Portland. During this past year we spent a lot of time putting together puzzles and creating lego scenes.

My passion is to work in high schools supporting students while they find their super power and connect to what makes them excited about the future."

Welcome Neomi Navarro

Ms. Navarro is also joining the McDaniel counseling team next year. Here are a few things as we get to know her:

Neomi, is a Portland native, a mother of a teenager and a college graduate!

She is passionate about working with first generation and immigrant students. She attended Cleveland High School and loved Global Studies and was involved in the Latino Student Union.

She is an advocate for student’s educational rights. She is inspired by her children, students, advocacy, leadership, collaborative practices and social justice. She will be helping to build a new M.E.Ch.A. chapter at McDaniel.

Welcoming Incoming Freshman

Incoming Freshmen (current 8th graders) & their parents/guardians are invited to join counselors virtually this week. We know there a lot of nerves around starting high school, particularly given the challenges of this past year.

Student Forecasting Verification

Counselors will be working on next year's student schedules in the coming weeks. Please ask your student to review their class selections in StudentVUE (or you can look in ParentVUE) under "course requests". Since forecasting occurs yearly each winter, students often forget what choices they have made. Students should notify their counselor with any level changes (math, world language) but we will not be making elective updates as teacher staffing & the overall school schedule has been decided.

Junior Guidance

On May 19th Juniors were invited to attend a grade-level meeting with counselors. Students can find this presentation in their Canvas inbox if they missed this meeting.

Information was shared to help students learn what action steps they should take heading into summer to realize their post-high school plans. Students were introduced to MaiaLearning & completed a career interest inventory as well as beginning their college search. Resources & timelines were shared around college, trade/apprenticeship and military options.
