It's Teacher Appreciation Week: May 2 - 6, 2022

Help Us Celebrate the Staff for Teacher Appreciation Week!

First of all, we thank those parents who always give thank you's to the staff. I love it when a teacher tells me about the kindness of our parents. It means so much to them and to me.

It is hard to get teachers because of the shortage, and it is just as hard to get support staff for schools. We have been short-handed this year. Still, our staff members have taken on additional assignments to ensure learning continues. They contact you to keep you informed of academic growth and to let you know when support is needed. They plan pageants, competitions, sporting events, dances, and more to ensure students can have fun at school. They stay late when you're running late for pick up, talk to you on weekends when they can't get you during the week, and do so much more. You each have staff members here at Sanders that go beyond what is expected of them. Help me show them how much we appreciate them during this one week of the 36 weeks of school.

We have planned appreciation activities for a staff. You can help by doing any of the following activities:

  1. Send a thank you email to a staff member
  2. Have your child write a thank you note to a staff member
  3. Send a snack pack to a staff member or to the staff
  4. Donate a gift card to the staff's Golden Ticket Scavenger Hunt (any amount is okay)
  5. Provide a lunch for your child's teachers
  6. Any idea you may have is welcome

Thank you again for your kindness and support!

Let's Get Ready for Summer!

There are several programs that are being offered at W. G. Sanders this summer. First of all, we will offer programs for students who have not met the requirements for promotion to the next grade level due to low academic performance or low class attendance. Remember, regardless of the reason, students are not allowed more than 10 days of absences from a class.

Also, we are offering enrichment programs. To see more about the programs being offered this summer, take a look at the Summer SOAR 2022 brochure which is posted on the Richland One website (www.richlandone.org). In the brochure, you will find a complete listing of district program offerings, along with criteria, features, and registration information.

There is Still Time to Join the Superintendent's Book Club!

Richland One Superintendent Dr. Craig Witherspoon launched a book club in conjunction with the celebration of Read Across America Day on March 2, and he is offering a unique incentive to encourage students to join.

Tigers, for you to become Superintendent’s Book Club members, students must read eight chapter books between March 2 and May 6. Book Club members will be invited to a special reading celebration, and there will be recognition and prizes for the school, class, and students who read the most books. Also, if students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade collectively read 250,000 books, they will be allowed to duct tape Dr. Witherspoon to a wall.

See your ELA teachers to document reading in your reading logs.

STAR Has Ended! We Are Make-Up Testing, Analyzing the Data, and Planning Celebrations - Look for Growth Targets

STAR testing ended this week; however, the testing window has been extended to May 6th. All students are reviewing their growth targets. As soon as students submitted the assessment, teachers were able to determine if they met their expected growth target. Contact your child's teacher, an assistant principal, a guidance counselor, or me if you have any questions about your child's growth target. All of your children know how to have a data conference and can lead you through their own data conference.

Several students have analyzed their data and have requested to retest because they did not meet their target. I listen to their analysis and supporting reasons for retesting. I let them know that just because they didn't do a good job is not a reason to retest. I expect them to perform well when testing; however, I will listen to reasons that hindered their performance during testing and make a decision after the meeting. I expect students to be an advocate for themselves and will listen to their voices at all times.
