Western Hills HS

*YOUR* Western Hills Cougars Boys soccer team concluded its most successful season in decades with a 2-0 defeat to San Elizario on Friday in front of a large, raucous crowd of supporters at Northwest ISD Stadium in the Region I Semifinals.

The boys finish two victories away from a trip to the state tournament.

With a crowd of more than a dozen current and former faculty looking on, plus four Spirit bus loads of classmates, the Cougars got off to an inauspicious start, falling behind in the first minute.

It took the Cougars much of the first half to settle into the match, but once they did, the action was quite even. Western Hills had a couple of shots blocked by the Eagles’ defense, and a couple of set-piece plays narrowly missed their targets.

The second half was more of the same, but with about 20 minutes left in the match, San Elizario scored a second goal, and the Cougars’ best efforts to cut the deficit fell short.

Individually, Yeshua Muhindo did an excellent job against a very stout Eagles back line. Wilondja Ebula battled valiantly in the midfield, and Cruz Hernandez came off the bench and was rock solid at the back, even pressed into a position change due to yellow cards. Jorge Urbina made several outstanding saves to keep the Cougars in the match.

Western Hills ends its season with a record of 19-7, reaching the Regional Semifinals for only the second time in school history.

The team would like to thank the staff and students for their support, and a special shout-out to the teachers who rode the Spirit Buses the past several weeks, enabling several hundred students to attend and support their classmates. We hope we made you proud, and we vow to be back next year with the same exciting soccer to entertain you.

GO COUGARS!
