September 2019
Dear Parent and Guardian,
As you may know, the Region is working towards improving our analysis of students learning in order to provide meaningful student engagement and increase student achievement. To help with this, the Region is adding a new assessment and reporting system this year called aimswebPlus for all students in Grade K-8.
What is aimswebPlus?
aimswebPlus provides data that help us adjust the level and intensity of instruction to the needs of each student. The aimswebPlus reading and math assessments are used for three main purposes:
- Universal Screening, to identify students who may need additional support; and
- Progress Monitoring, to track the progress of students receiving additional support and ensure that they are on schedule to meet their reading and math goals.
- Drive Instruction, to determine which areas and concepts students need additional support.
In Region 15, our curriculum and instruction is designed to create mastery of state and national standards. We do not teach to any specific test or assessment and believe that when students can read, write, and critically think, they will be successful on whatever assessment they take.
Who will be tested?
Each fall, winter, and spring, all students in Grade K-8 will take the aimswebPlus tests. For students identified as needing additional support, we will monitor their progress frequently. If a student is not showing sufficient progress, we can then adjust classroom instruction and add additional support as needed.
How much time will all this testing take?
While this sounds like a lot of testing time, these tests are very brief; most of the individual tests take only 1 to 3 minutes to complete and the total time for each of the reading and math assessments is about 30-45 minutes. Each individual test can be this brief because, unlike tests that measure in detail how a student performs in a variety of skill areas, aimswebPlus assesses the foundational reading or math skills that are good indicators of overall performance.
What do I need to do to prepare my child for testing?
No special preparation for aimswebPlus testing is required, other than preparing for school as on any other day. The testing takes a short amount of time and will not be a big event for your child. Then information gathered from aimswebPlus will be used to guide instruction and support for students.
What kind of information does the test provide?
Each aimswebPlus test results in a single score, usually the number of correct responses within a brief time limit. This score can be compared to a national average or to the average performance for your student’s school or the Region and can indicate outcomes for the end-of-year state test.
Since this is the first time the Region will be implementing aimswebPlus as a universal assessment for all students in Grade K-8, parents/guardians will not receive a report in the fall as it is the first administration of this test and initial data. Parents/Guardians will receive a report in both the winter and spring of this school year so that they can see their student’s progress. After the second administration of the aimswebPlus testing in January, 2020, an evening informational session will be held for parents/guardians to explain the reports provided for their students. Additional information about the evening information session will be forthcoming.
If you would like additional information or have any questions, you may contact your school principal and Dr. Chiappetta and I are always here to answer additional questions that may arise.
Thank you for your partnership and for choosing to be a part of the Region 15 community.
Sincerely,
Mr. Joshua Smith, Superintendent of Schools
Dr. Carrie Chiappetta, Assistant Superintendent of Schools
