Principal's Message
If your kids are anything like mine, they are not super responsive to the question, “How was your day at school?”. More often than not, the answer is fine, okay, good, or not good. So what I had to do is change the questions and keep the kids off-balance. I made a list, and I keep it in the car to remind me of the questions. Keeping open lines of dialogue between you and your children will keep you in the loop with what is going on during the time your child is at school or hanging with their friends. Here is a shortlist to get you started:
- What made you smile today?
- Who did you sit by today in class?
- Was anyone gone today at school?
- Did you learn anything you didn’t understand?
- If you could switch seats, who would you choose to sit by?
- Who did you sit by at lunch today?
- If you could change one thing about today, what would it be?
- What made your teacher smile today?
- What did you have for lunch today?
- 10.How were your friends today at school?
One caveat to that idea, kids speak from their point of view. That point of view is their truth, but there are oftentimes many other perspectives. So listen to the stories and ask follow-up questions.
- What happened before that?
- Then what did the teacher say?
- How did your friend respond?
You know your child best. If you are concerned, send the teacher or me an email. If we know about the incident, we are more than happy to share, or we can look into your concerns to give you peace of mind. After twenty-four years in middle school, kids will tell stories from the point of view that usually makes them without any fault. Enjoy your break and keep those conversations lively.
