Family Access Program Partners with Westbury
The partnership with Westbury has allowed The Family Access Program (FAP) to identify students and their parents needing assistance with the enrolling and renewal process for medical coverage. The need for the FAP services is in great demand says Nurse Parker who is the school nurse. Presently, while working very close with the onsite Wraparound Specialists, Principal Monaghan and Nurse Parker the FAP has initially met with (12) students and (2) parents needing assistance with Harris Health. Each identified candidate was advised of the documents that are required and given a benefits checklist for eligibility. Follow-up appointments were scheduled.
On Monday, November 4, 2019, The FAP participated in the Grand Opening/Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Westbury's New Wraparound Transformation Center (WTC). The additional partners present were Change Happens, Houston Community College, Workforce Solutions, and the HISD Ascending to Men Project. This event allowed the community to see the past work done, efforts and the vision for the WTC. It also alerted the community at larger that the WTC is not just a center for services, but a place that is equipped with comfortable seating and tables for mentorship meetings and introduced the Family Access Program, a food pantry that’s stocked with healthy foods and beverages; the student laundry room and the supply of hygiene products and the hygiene classes.
The Ceremony also highlighted and gave homage to the faculty of Westbury, the staff and the community stakeholders who have committed as partners to help the population of at-risk students at Westbury as they carry the weight of the world on their shoulders who are simply trying to obtain a high school diploma and become productive citizens. Students were also present for the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony.
The event concluded with great food, media interviews and with compliments from HISD Trustee Wanda Adams, who spoke very highly of the work and the presence that the FAP has established at Westbury.
