WM 1st Grade Curriculum Update
November 2019
Reading and Writing
Reading
During the month of November we will wrap up our Word Detective Unit. Your child will have a chance to work with and build new snap words. They will also continue to work on using strategies to solve tricky words such as identifying blends/digraphs in a word and exploring contractions.
Writing
During Writer’s Workshop we will spend two weeks creating “How To” stories. They will write step by step procedures on how to do some sort of task. We will then move into informational writing.
Phonics
We are currently solving mysteries around silent e. We will continue to work on building our word walls. Remember students should be able to read and write the SNAP words.
Math
Our focus this month will be developing fact strategies such as doubling, counting on and back to solve combinations within twelve. We will develop efficiency when counting by fives and tens beyond ten.
During Number Corner, we will be working with fractions. Students will learn fraction words such as wholes, halves, and fourths. They will also start telling time to the hour!
Science
Three of our classrooms are studying about Air and Weather. The other three are learning about Light and Sound. Please look in your child's newsletters for more information.
Social Studies
Throughout the month of November classrooms will be focusing on gratitude and how we can express our gratitude throughout the year.
LMC - Library

Technology
Students are creating original graphics and using clipart in drawing programs to illustrate concepts and ideas. Students will be working on a fall fun web over the next few classes.
Art
Why are there so many ways to make art? How do science and art connect? How do artists use their 5 senses? (Rose Windows, Snowflake Medallions)
PE
We are finishing up our throwing and catching unit, working on locomotor skills (skipping, galloping, shuffling), and playing all sorts of fun, Fall games/activities! Our gymnastics unit will start midway through the month (Nov. 18th).
Guidance
We are learning about Empathy this month. We are learning how to identify emotions in ourselves and others. We can recognize that people can feel and think different things about the same situations. Not assuming everyone feels just as we do or as we would in a situation helps build empathy.
