Staff comments from the Year-End Library Survey
"Every part of the library is wonderful, but I especially love the tables set up for classrooms near the windows, the coffee service, the book selection, and the welcoming atmosphere."
"The desire to meet the needs of all students through various furniture, designated spaces, and activities."
"Breakouts, of course! And the fact that it is a comfortable, inviting space for students."
"It would be ideal for the library to be open after school. I think that would help support students who don't have access to the internet or academic support at home. Another part time staff member would be crucial for this."
"more srt, lunch, after-school opportunities"
"I love the Donuts in the Library before breaks!"
"The Nook & iced coffee! :) But really, its become a welcoming & safe space for students to hang out. Its also a comfortable space to use to get out of the classroom & do something else."
Student Comments from the Year-End Library Survey
Many of the comments from the students this year dealt with making the library more accessible to students. Many students wanted the library open after school.
"Stay open later after school! There were so many times I wanted to help someone study or needed a quiet place to be after school when I waited for a ride and the library was already closed."
"i gave the library an A but i just wanted to say i love the library very much and i do understand that AHS is privileged to have so many activities in there and a comfy chairs and places to sit and do homework or research online or even relax in a quiet area for a little while. i don't go very often but i will try to take better advantage of what i have available to me."
"Library is a very fun place to chat with others and being able to read in quiet, peaceful area!"
"The only comment I have is still on the availability. I think the library is such a great space for students and I often find myself sad that I haven’t been able to spend more time in the library due to restrictions."
"SRT is too crazy"
"Maybe having the library open an hour or two after school on some days? For students to study or do homework."
"It would be good if the library was open after school, because one just doesn't have time to go during the day. The lunch option is a great thing, but it's just too far away from where I need to be. The library feels like a comfortable place to be, and it would be nice to be able to spend a little more time enjoying it."
"Some of the resource sites for research seem a bit dated in format (although not in quality); I often use much newer sites that offer similar quality resources with better formatting. Perhaps having some of these sites available as links for newer students would be appreciated."
Goals Update for the 2018-2019 School Year
- Create Student Focus Group to help with purchasing of material -- student group was advertised multiple times, but only two students volunteered for this. When I asked them to propose new books or read existing journals, they participated once. While this is definitely a worthy goal, more work will be needed in implementation. It is the plan to work on this with Library TAs next year.
- Increase usage of academic online resources by 10% -- the usage of resources increased by 43% with the introduction of the databases with all of the Freshmen English classes and many of the Junior English classes.
Goals for the 2019-2020 School Year
- As so many of our students on the survey stated that they don't like to read (see above), I will help to create a culture of reading at Avon High School by creating a staff Rosie book club with meetings once each month, promoting signs that tell what staff members are reading, and helping teachers see how they can integrate reading time into their classes. Promotion of reading with students will continue, but by focusing on staff, it is the hopes that we can create a large group of reading role models within the building.
- Redesign Avon High School Library website.
Mission of the Avon High School Libraries
The mission of the Avon High School Library program is to encourage the quest for knowledge and promote the joy of reading by providing free access to a variety of materials that meet both the educational curriculum and recreational reading needs of Avon High School students.
