Dear Carman Families,


Please be sure to mark your calendars for the annual Hearing and Vision screenings that will be taking place in September and October.


Hearing and vision screenings will take place for all Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, and 5th grade students. In addition, all new 2nd and 4th graders to the Parkway School District will also be screened. The Hearing screening will be performed by Special School District and Parkway Nurses will conduct Vision screening. If you have a concern about your child's hearing or vision please let the school nurse know and don't forget to send your child's glasses for vision screening.

In addition, we are happy to announce that Flu Vaccinations will be made available here at Carman on Tuesday, October 26th for our staff as well as all students!

The necessary consent forms (two pages) as well as information about the vaccine are attached below. More information on insurance coverage, etc. is listed further down in this Paw Print under our Nurse's Notes.

Recess Updates

Our numbers for isolation and quarantines due to Covid exposure have been low. We are beginning to look at plans for allowing more than one class to use the same recess zones at a time. We plan to start slow with the hopes of transitioning to what recess looked like pre-Covid. The district gave building principals permission to begin the process. Each building's plan will not look the same. Some buildings have already started mixing classes and other schools are choosing not to mix at this time. There are a few factors to consider. At Carman, we will begin to transition back to a pre-Covid recess. Please look for us to roll this out in the near future. We are having a few more conversations at the building level and will then be able to move forward. Thank you for your support. Our goal is always to provide an atmosphere that allows us to keep all students safe and able to attend classes due to limiting the need for quarantines.


**While we will begin going back to mixing classes at recess, if a class is placed into a modified quarantine, they will have to wear masks at recess and could possibly have to go to a zone with their classmates.***

For the 2021-2022 school year, breakfast and lunch will once again be free for all students who attend Carman Trails. Menus can be found in the Parkway App, on the Parkway website, as well as this link: https://parkwayschools.nutrislice.com/menu/carman-trails-elementary


Although lunch is free for everyone this year, it is important to have families fill out the form to apply for the free and reduced lunch program every year. The benefits of this distinction carry over to September 2022.

In addition, our building also receives additional funding to help with staffing and special programming based on the number of families that qualify. If in a typical school year it would benefit your family to receive free or reduced lunch pricing, PLEASE fill out this form.

Paper versions of the form are also being sent home with students.

Chromebook Insurance - ACTION NEEDED

This school year students in grades 3-12 will receive or have received a Chromebook, similar to a small, touchscreen laptop, that they will be able to use at school and home. We need every student to either opt-in or opt-out of insurance by September 24, 2021. Information on how to register can be found here.


We encourage you to opt for insurance that helps cover damage, loss or theft. Learn more about the fee and the protection it provides and how to register here.

DISMISSAL UPDATE - PLEASE READ

Please see the visual below for additional information about our Early Childhood dismissal procedures, as we are sharing some space on the north side of the building.

When utilizing the Car Pickup Line, please do not block Door 27 as our Early Childhood classes dismiss to their cars and busses from that area.

Dear Carman Families:

Flu season is coming up quickly and the best way to prevent influenza is with the yearly flu vaccine. Parkway will be parenting with the Visiting Nurses Association again this year to provide flu shots to all students and families ages 3 and older on Tuesday, October 26th. Receiving your influenza vaccine at school is not required, but it is easy and convenient. If you're interested please see the information below, including the necessary 2-page form that will be needed in order to sign up for the flu vaccine.

Adventure Club News of the Week

Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve explored what responsibility means and how each and every one of us can be more responsible in our daily lives (i.e. brushing our teeth, making our beds, etc.). Along with responsibility, we also talked about emotional control. We worked on mindful breathing (the Calm app is great for this although a bit pricey) and made anti-stress putty.

This past week we all turned into scientists and veterinarians and learned how to make “Elephant Toothpaste”. With fall right around the corner, in the next few weeks we will be cleaning up the Garden and getting it ready for winter. We might even try and plant some garlic this winter!

Free and Reduced Breakfast and Lunch Program

Parkway Schools is pleased to offer free breakfast and lunch to students for the 2021-2022 school year. We encourage parents/guardians to complete the application to receive discounts and savings with several programs. It is important for families to sign up for the Free and Reduced Program so you are in the system for the 2022-2023 school year. This way your child would be covered under the 30 day grace period allowing you time to re-apply for the 2022-2023 school year without being automatically placed on full paid status.

Sustainable Schools Challenge


What is the Sustainable Schools Challenge?

This is an annual Parkway program for all students, staff, and families to participate in sustainability activities while competing for prizes for their school running Sept 1, 2021 - April 29, 2022. It's designed to connect our district mission of preparing students to respond to an ever-changing world with our district sustainability goals incentivizing actions that reduce our environmental impact.


What you can do:


  • Share and watch the 21-22 Sustainable Schools Challenge video presentation (6 mins) introducing the program, new updates, and a walkthrough of the website.
  • Sign up now! Each student, staff, and family can sign up to earn a point for their school and receive the monthly newsletter with activities.
  • Get the word out - schools have had success encouraging participation through their school newsletters and websites


Updates to the program include:


  • Monthly prize winners will be selected through a drawing
    • 50 points = 1 drawing entry
  • New Mini-Grant program to fund projects up to $400
  • Virtual Elementary, Middle, and High added as competing schools
