TEEN READ WEEK "TURN YOUR DREAMS INTO REALITY" STARTED TODAY
There are three workshops being offered to classes in the library this week.
First, expand your horizons by reading the Young Adult Book Award books. Stop by the library and pick up your list of books, watch the "trailers" online and then read to see "the places you will go".
Third, learn about DISCUS, our online 24/7 internet library as well as the public library's OVERDRIVE. Also learn about our EBooks. The world is at your fingertips FOR FREE everyday all day long!

Gaelyn Jenkins:
Students made "spine-tingling" book spine poems! Book spine poetry is created by stacking books in a way that their titles make the poems. We had a tough time choosing from the almost 150 entries, but five poems were chosen to be voted on by the students, faculty and community members who visited the book fair. All five won a book fair prize pack, and the grand prize winner was 8th grader Syntia! She won a book of her choice (she chose The One by Kiera Cass) and Mrs. Jenkins took it to YALLFEST in Charleston to be signed by Kiera Cass! Ms. Cass was also given Syntia's winning poem.
Family Fiction Fright Night - The RMS Media Center and PTSA collaborated to host the first Family Fiction Fright Night on Thursday, Oct. 23! The book fair was open, and we had food trucks, a costume contest, a pumpkin contest that raised money for clubs and groups at RMS, a performance by author/magician Chad Crews (who was also selling and autographing his book), and a spooky classroom! The event was a success, with over 300 in attendance!
Chad Crews Visit - Also on Thursday, Oct. 23, author/magician Chad Crews visited RMS and performed works by Edgar Allan Poe in his show "Nevermore" for each grade level. Students were amazed at the magic tricks he performed during his show as well; minds were read, teachers "shared a memory" and tables levitated! We look forward to having Mr. Crews back at RMS again soon!
Book Fair - Our fall book fair was a success! We were able to get books in the hands of hundreds of students, and many teachers were gifted books for their classroom libraries. The profit from the fair was used to get over 130 new books for the library plus funds to bring more fun and educational artists and events to the media center.

Book Fair @ Fork Shoals

Fork Shoals School had its best Scholastic Book Fair ever this fall. The event coincided with the school's Dynamite Dads breakfast as well as the school-wide Thanksgiving meal. I dressed in costume (as a knight, obviously) one evening and had a medieval themed photo booth for students, parents, and teachers. Parent and teacher volunteers created lovely decorations to go along with this year's theme, Sir Readalot's Castle.
Teen Read Week @ Woodmont High
Sandra Brundage & Jena Broome
“I Read…What’s Your Superpower?” was the theme of Teen Read Week at Woodmont High School. The week was full of activities inspired by superheroes and Hunger Games. The media center sponsored two movie nights, so the students could see the first two Hunger Games movies before the third was released. Also, one morning they had the art teacher teach a special class on how to draw a superhero to the morning crowd in the media center.
Throughout the week, students received treats when they checked out and logged books for the Wild About Reading program. Students also started the Wild About Reading Bingo program that will continue until late April. Students who read a BINGO will be invited to a special library program in May. Finally the week ended with the 2nd Annual Hunger Games! Twenty-two students competed in a fun Hunger Games style tournament! Mrs. Brundage, Mrs. Broome and Mrs. Emerson had a blast showing their alter ego and their superpowers for this fun week!!!

BRHS celebrated Teen Read Week with several activities. Students who participated in our online Teen Read Week Trivia Challenge were entered in a drawing for Rick Riordan’s latest novel, Blood of Olympus.
The media center also sponsored a book jacket contest, in which students created an alternate book jacket for their favorite book. We covered the jackets with Demco book covers and displayed them on discarded books. Teachers judged the book jackets and the first place winner received a Regal gift card. Our second place winner won a gift card to the Tiger Café and third place won an assortment of candy and pencils. Each teacher was given four “Caught Reading” passes to send students to the media center for a treat. This year we had increased participation and our book jacket contest created a lot of interest.

We wrapped a most excellent Book Fair -- the most money we've ever made! We had several contests going on: Guess the Gumballs and The Eyes Have it, a matching game in which students had to match the eyes with the teacher. Plus anyone buying three or more items at the bookfair got a prize!
Pumpkinpaloooza is an annual event in our media center. This year we had fewer entries but they were all really creative! Congratulations to the winning pumpkins: Junie B. Jones, Pumpkinator, and Once Upon A Time.
Our December Mustang Book party will be Dec. 18 for any students who already read at least 5 of the MBA titles. Typically we have 80-90 kids there.

Reading Apocalypse
Kathleen Carey
During Teen Read Week, Oct. 20 – 24, Greenville Middle students survived the Reading Apocalypse. All students visiting the library to check out a library book received an immunization against illiteracy and ignorance. Students answered trivia questions from apocalyptic titles and won Barnes and Noble gift cards and cash. Thanks to our PTA and their support with bulletin boards, displays and gummy treats for the students.
Sixth and seventh grade students attended an assembly in the library, Avoiding Internet Nightmares, presented by former law enforcement officer, Rick Floyd. He worked for several years investigating Internet crimes in Greenville. He is now employed by GCSD, and teaches Internet safety as well as working on Internet security.
Additionally, 8th grade students in Mrs. Henson’s class listened to book talks presented by library intern, Helen Prince. They then used the tablets and/or their own devices to text their vote to Poll Everywhere on the books they would most likely read. Their votes were instantly recorded and charted for students.
The South Carolina State Library lent their display The Science of Zombies to the media center for two weeks during this period also.
Finally, Special Education students attended a special program in which they took turns participating and telling the story, The Little Old Lady Who Wasn’t Afraid of Anything.
Little Free Library--RVP Grant

We have a new “Little Free Library” in our Taylors Elementary front garden! We received a Robbie Van Pelt Grant to pay for the supplies to build the library structure which Mr. and Mrs. Gerald built and painted for Taylors Elementary. Thank you, YOU did an awesome job!!! Our charter number for the Taylors Elementary Little Free Library is 17,847. You can visit the website at www.littlefreelibrary.org to find out more information about how to have your own little free library in your neighborhood.
How does the little free library work? You bring a book that you no longer want to keep and swap it out with a book in the little library. If you do not have a book to swap, please borrow a book but return it later so someone else can read it. All books should be gently used. Give a book, take a book! (You do not place library books of any kind in this little library.) Topcat Readers take responsibility and pride in their community!!!
