Greeting Shaw Montessori,

Another successful testing week is behind us! Two weeks down and three to go!

This week Turf Contractors kindly donated and installed artificial turf in our Gaga Ball pit. We are all fairly excited that we will no longer have to play Gaga in the mud or dust. A special thank you to Michael at Turf Contractors for this incredible donation.

At Thursday night’s Governing Board Meeting, the Board approved four of the six recommended changes to the Healthy Verify Mitigation Plan.

The approved changes include:

· Making masks/face coverings optional

· Eliminating social distancing on buses

· Reopening drinking fountains

· Eliminating restrictions for visitors and volunteers

*These changes will go into effect Monday, April 25, and not before. This time frame will enable us time to develop communication and implementation plans.

There were two items that were not approved last night:

· Reducing the quarantine period from 10 days to 5 days

· Eliminating contract tracing

The Board has asked for additional information regarding contradictory CDC guidance and guidelines. The District will consult with Dr. Moran from Healthy Verify to answer these additional questions and will revisit these items at a future meeting.

Timeline for Changes

To ensure our schools have ample time to prepare, the Board approved for these changes to go into effect on Monday, April 25. This will give us the opportunity to communicate with families and staff, provide time for schools to create implementation plans based on the needs of individual schools, and for schools to create a support system for students as they transition from wearing masks over the last two years. We want to be sure students feel safe and comfortable with their choice of wearing or not wearing face masks, and ensure we continue providing safe learning environments for whatever decisions families make.

Wishing you the very best,

Principal Engdall

Spring State Testing

Every April, our 3rd to 8th grade students are required to take the state assessments. This year's assessments will be AzSCI (Science) for 5th and 8th grade students only and AASA (Writing, Reading, and Math) for all 3rd to 8th grade students. These standardized tests provide a snapshot of how students place on grade level standards. For information about the tests, including access to the online sample tests please click the following link: https://www.azed.gov/assessment/aasa

The testing calendar has been provided in this issue of SSS. Your child's teacher will also be reaching out to you prior to testing. To prepare for testing, we recommend students get a good night's rest, have a healthy breakfast, as well as bring headphones, snacks, and water. Please reach out to Jennifer Collier jennifer.collier@phxschools.org or your child's teacher with any questions you may have.

Important note: students must submit the test on the same day they start the test. Please do not plan doctor's appointments or early pick-ups on the day of your child's scheduled test.

Per District guidelines student headphones may not be Bluetooth enabled for testing. Corded headphones only for the state assessments. Thank you!

Garden Update

Big picture

Greetings!

Our garden has been thriving in this spring heat! We have a variety of vegetables and flowers. Our hollyhock bush is in full bloom. Stop by the field garden to check out the vernal surprises.

We continued our study on the chicken and learned about hierarchy in a chicken flock. The students were able to observe “Big Daddy” with the flock. They watched him herd the flock and direct them with his vocalizations. They also heard him crow. It was a pleasure to hear the elementary students translate Big Daddy’s crows into English phrases, such as, “Don’t mess with my hens” or “I don’t like 1st graders”.

Our eggs are one week out from hatching! The students are super excited! We will have chicks on campus beginning next week. Please see me or Mr. Leinbach if you want to purchase some chicks.

We can always use coffee grounds and can donations. Please make sure the coffee grounds have been brewed. You can pick up used grounds at Starbucks for free. NO MORE SINGLE BREW PLASTIC CUPS PLEASE! We also prefer that your cans are uncrushed (the small kiddos love this task), however, we will accept crushed cans as well. You can drop them off at the table outside of the front office entrance.

Our bottle cap drive has concluded. Thank you all for donating your caps. We have sorted the colors and are ready to begin our design with Mrs. Ketchum and Christina Ramirez next week.

We still need your Home Depot donations. Even $25.00 is a huge contribution. Here’s the link to Home Depot gift cards: https://www.homedepot.com/c/Gift_Cards
