A Note from Our Principal

Dear North Beach Families:

On Monday, we observe Memorial Day. As we enjoy the improving weather and the day off from school, please take time to recognize the service members of our armed forces who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

North Beach has four new staff members to welcome into our family for the 2021-2022 school year. Three are familiar and one is brand new to us. Please welcome and congratulate these amazing people when you see them.

Tristan Wiley: coming to us from Texas, Mr. Wiley is taking over the Resource position from Ms. Billroth, who is retiring after many years of service to the North Beach community. Mr. Wiley and his family are going to be a wonderful addition to our community, and we look forward to meeting him in person. Mr. Wiley brings experience from numerous schools around the world and he is currently completing studies for his doctoral program. Welcome to North Beach, Mr. Wiley!

Bronte King: some of you will remember Ms. King, who covered Jenny Young’s maternity leave two years ago. She is returning to our kindergarten team as a permanent member. Welcome back, Ms. King!

Anna Eifert: Ms. Eifert has been a long term substitute this year as our music teacher. She has now accepted the position in a permanent capacity and we could not be happier. Congratulations, Ms. Eifert!

Jessica Bjorklund: Everybody knows Jessica! Ms. Bjorklund is a mom of two North Beach fifth graders and has been a volunteer, PTA treasurer, tutor and now, permanent full time Special Education Instructional Assistant. She is taking over for Geri Parker, who recently retired after 30 years in education. Congratulations, Jessica!

Whether you’re staying close to home or getting away, remember that health and safety guidelines can change, and are different depending on whether someone has been vaccinated.

Have a safe, healthy weekend!

From the office:

Pick up on 90th (up on the hill)

Thank you to all of you who are pulling all the way forward as far as they can before stopping to pick up your student. Thank you to all of you who continue to wait in your car until your student is delivered to you. To everyone else, please be mindful of the stressful and timely pick-up rules. These are in place to make it run smoothly and get students safely into their cars as quickly as possible:

  • Approaching 90th at the staircase, pull all the way forward as far as you can before stopping your car.
  • Do NOT get out of your vehicle, a staff member will bring your student to you.

Family Refrigerator Tip Sheet

In a few weeks, we'll be facing yet another transition after a year full of transitions. I will soon share some specific tips about supporting students through the end of the school year, but this week, I'm sharing some reminders from our RULER program- mindsets and practices to support well-being and build stronger relationships in the home. Focusing on these practices help families function more smoothly, especially during times of stress.

LOOKING FOR OTHER WAYS TO GET INVOLVED AT WHITMAN?

Here are some fun programs run by volunteers that support our students

FRIENDS OF WHITMAN (MUSIC)

The Whitman Music Program is known for its high level of musical and performance excellence. Whitman provides one of the most complete middle school music programs in Seattle - offering instruction in wind, string, brass and percussion instruments spanning jazz and contemporary to classical. This robust music program is led by our phenomenal Music Director, Joel Orsen.

Coming in as a 6th grader you can enroll in either 6th grade Band or Orchestra and then advance on to Junior Band, Senior Band, Senior Orchestra or Jazz Band.

During a typical school year, we hold several concerts at Whitman and a spring performance at Peddler Brewing for some students to showcase their hard work and talents. We have a few fun fundraising events, such as wreath sales during the holidays and bake sales during the concerts, and in past years, 8th graders have gone on a trip to Silverwood Amusement Park to commemorate their musical journey at Whitman!

Whether you are new to playing a musical instrument or are continuing your path in music from elementary school, we look forward to you joining us at Whitman Music!

EQUITY PARENT TEAM

The Whitman Equity Team is a diverse group of Whitman Middle School families committed to promoting equity at Whitman Middle School. We partner with the PTSA and the school to offer learning and sharing opportunities that highlight racial equity and other forms of equity. Over the past year we've hosted book club discussions, organized Black Lives Matter at Whitman clothing orders, invited Whitman families to attend other racial equity events online with us, and shared ways to learn and contribute towards equity at Whitman Middle School. Next year we hope to have guest speakers, skill building workshops, and other fun events. Participating in this work is engaging, inspiring, and educational. We hope you will join us!

WHITMAN THEATER

Whitman’s new Theater Group began last year and engages students in the creative process- not just singing, dancing or acting. Students will be able to try out stage management, costume and set design as well as sound and lights operation. This year’s production was a Zoom Radio Play featuring student created advertisements as well as student art displayed onscreen during the live broadcast. See the club’s website for more information - PAW website

PNW Parent Education Presentation: Digital Safety 101

After more than a year of remote schooling, nonstop developments in educational technology, and social media overload -- now more than ever -- it’s important for families to educate themselves on digital safety. To address this, we’re partnering up with PNW Parent Education (www.pnwparented.org) for a presentation titled, “Digital Safety 101”. Jo Langford, dad, Master’s-level therapist, author and sex educator for tweens, teens and parents, will help parents figure out how to balance their family’s digital life with boundaries, etiquette, and good judgement. This FREE online educational event is on Wednesday, May 26, 2021 at 6:30 pm. If you are interested in attending, please register at: https://tinyurl.com/digitalsafety2021.

This relevant and engaging presentation will also include the following information:

  • An overview of youth behavior in a digital age: the risks and benefits of online life;

  • Raising digital natives: setting up guidelines and house rules for safety;

  • Roadmap of highways & potholes of digital development;

  • Q&A with guest moderator: Christy Keating of the Heartful Parent.

Lastly, while watching the event, you can order a delicious family meal from The Extra Ingredient: https://www.exploretock.com/theextraingredient/. Please click on the link titled, “May 26, 2021: PNW Parent Education Event - Pre Order”.
