Cowboy Communication
January 15, 2021
NO SCHOOL on Monday, January 18
I hope you are all getting started on a nice extended weekend. Our weeks are getting busier and busier, so it is important to rest when you can!
I would personally like to thank everyone for their diligence in being aware of the COVID-19 safety precautions we are taking on campus. While the numbers have continued to rise in the San Antonio community, they have not risen at Longs Creek. Please help us to stay on the right path by keeping your children home if they have any of the symptoms outlined in the COVID precautions section of this newsletter or if they have been exposed to anyone with COVID. Together we will get through this!
If you are thinking about allowing your child to return to campus for in-person learning, please make note of the deadlines below. As a reminder, if you have decided your child will remain a virtual learner, that option will still be available for the remainder of the school year. Should you decide to change the instructional method back to in-person learning, there are 3 more opportunities for you to do so:
- February 3 (deadline to begin in-person on February 8)
- March 5 (deadline to begin in-person on March 15)
- April 16 (deadline to begin in-person on April 19)
If your child is an in-person learner and you would like to change them to virtual, we can do that at any time. Please remember with any change to the instructional setting, there will most likely be a change of teacher.
Thank you for sharing your children with us!

Counselors Corner
Hello Longs Creek Families!
This month, we will be talking with the 5th graders about Middle School course selections! Unfortunately, we will not be able to take the 5th graders on a tour of Harris Middle School like we usually do. We will receive a virtual tour we will be showing the students in the coming weeks. We will begin talking about course selections with the students starting towards the end of January and those will be open and available to you in Skyward until February 19th. There are some application windows that are open now, which is the reason we are giving information to you in November. We have some important information below regarding course selections, Magnet programs, and school choice.
Did you know, NEISD has 4 magnet middle school options for our 5th graders next year? These programs offer a great middle school experience while channeling your students specific interests. Here is a link that provides all the details to our Magnet Program and the Information Sessions… https://www.neisd.net/Page/30952. Magnet program applications are open now through February 12th. You should know whether your student is accepted into a program by February 19th.
A Course Fair for available middle school courses will take place on January 19th, 2021 from 5:00pm – 8:00pm (more information to come) where the middle schools will offer an opportunity for you to learn about the different course offerings for your child so you can make the most informed decision. This will be done in a hybrid model so you will have the option of attending virtually or in-person.
We also want to provide some help and resources to you (the parents), should you need any. We have a Virtual Counseling Corner we have set up in Google Classroom where you can access tips, tools, and things to help with calming down, self-care, and relaxation strategies. The code to join the Google Classroom is 5rw354n. We would love for you to take a look and use some of the resources there. You can access Google Classroom from your child’s launchpad, or by going to google.com, clicking the square of dots on the upper right-hand side of the page and then Google Classroom. There you will type in the code to connect to a class and you are all set!
If you ever have any questions, comments, or concerns about anything please feel free to reach out to us, we will be happy to help you in any way we can.

LiiNK Positive Actions
Parent Positive Actions--
Discuss the following with your children:
How do our family members show love to one another?
In what other ways would we like to have love shown to us?
How can we remember the good feelings we have for one another?
How do we as a family show love to people outside our family?
Ask Yourself: When you were a child, how did you like other to express love to you How did you want your parents to express love to you? In what ways do you express your love to your children? How can you help your children understand that you always treat those you love in loving ways? What positive actions do you encourage your family members to take in order to show that they love one another? How can you improve the way you express love to your children? To your spouse?
Plan and Do: This week take the positive action of expressing love for each child every day. Hugs, kisses, and kind words are only a few of the signals of love. Love each of your children abundantly and unconditionally. Pay attention to those moments this week when you feel the most love for your children. Store the feeling. Then when difficult situations arise between you and your child, pause and savor those sweet, warm feelings. Approach situations with love for your children, and you’ll find that you handle them more positively.
Campus COVID-19 Practices & Precautions
Hello Parents,
The clinic wants to inform you of safe practices and useful information to keep the spread of COVID-19 minimal and keep our schools open. One of the most important things parents and guardians can do is to perform a symptom check with their child daily before going to school. If your child has begun experiencing any of the symptoms below in a way that is new or unusual for them, please keep your child home and call Nurse Byerley at 210-407-4803.
Cough
Muscle or body aches
Sore throat
Congestion or runny nose
Chills
Loss of taste or smell
Diarrhea
Nausea or vomiting
Headache
Fatigue
Shortness of breath or trouble breathing
Feeling feverish or temperature greater than or equal to 100.0° F
If your child presents to the clinic with one of the symptoms listed above, Nurse Byerley will conduct an assessment and determine if they need to go home. Students will wear a mask and wait in a supervised clinic isolation area while awaiting pickup. Students who experience symptoms will be able to return to school after meeting the criteria of one of the following options:
Option 1
● At least 10 days have passed since the onset of symptoms and
● At least 24 hours fever free, without the use of fever-reducing medication and
● Improvement of symptoms
Option 2
● Submit a note to the school nurse from a medical professional clearing your child for return to school based on alternate diagnosis
Option 3
● Submit a negative COVID-19 test result to the school nurse
Nurse Byerley is also asking parents/guardians to please report the following situations to the clinic:
• Your child or a member of your household has tested positive for COVID-19
• Your child has had close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19
• Your child has begun to experience any of the symptoms listed in this letter in a way that is new or unusual for them
If any of the situations above apply to your child, they should not come to school. Please contact Longs Creek Clinic for information on returning to school at 210-407-4803.
