Happy Mother's Day to ALL Band Moms out there!!!!
Going on this week
The best is yet to come
We are in unparalleled times. With school closures, you have been forced into the role of full-time chef, housekeeper, parent, and now teacher!
You have a lot on your plate. But as our schools begin to plan for re-openings, you also have a lot to consider.
Having your child at home has provided for some family time that might otherwise have been lost to the hustle and bustle of every day life. You were able to keep them home, safe and cared for. In some ways, this is every parents’ dream. But, as we re-open our communities, we also re-open opportunities, possibilities, and obstacles that were absent during the quarantine.
As the quarantine ends and your children re-enter the world, you still want to protect and care for them. And that’s what music does.
Music…
- keeps kids away from drugs and alcohol
- keeps kids from being bullied
- keeps kids in a safe space
- helps kids find academic success
But more than that, music also means…
- more laughter
- more friends
- more memories
- more meaningful experiences
- more influential adults in their lives
In short, music represents your best hopes for them!
It may not be easy to see it right now, but I promise you, the best is yet to come!
Stay safe and hang in there.
Sincerely,
Mr. B.

Audition for the Cleveland Youth Wind Symphony! Auditions go to July 1.
We are excited to announce the upcoming auditions for the 2020-21 Cleveland Youth Wind Symphony (CYWS), presented by the Cleveland Institute of Music. Our three ensembles are dedicated to performing the most advanced symphonic band repertoire available. All CYWS groups are open to woodwind, brass and percussion players entering grades 7-12 in fall 2020. Please encourage your outstanding students to audition and share this information with your colleagues.
To ensure the health and safety of our community, all CYWS auditions for the 2020-21 season will take place online via video recording. Submitting an online CYWS audition is easy – simply direct your students to cim.edu/cyws and click the “apply now” button.
Audition Requirements
- Woodwind/Brass: Prepared solo with contrasting sections/movements (fast/technical & slow/lyrical)
- Percussion: Snare drum solo and a mallet instrument solo (marimba or xylophone preferred) of their choice. Students may also submit an optional third solo on another instrument of their choice: e.g. drum set, quads, or timpani.
Membership Requirements
- Participating students must maintain membership in their school band program.
- If student is home-schooled or there is no music program at their school, then private music lessons will fulfill this requirement.
- Take private lessons on their band instrument.
- Students may audition if they are not currently taking private lessons.
- Upon acceptance into the program, students must enroll in lessons.
- The CIM Preparatory Division offers excellent private instruction on all instruments, and a 10% discount for all CYWS members. For more information, visit cim.edu/prep.
Rehearsal Times & Locations
- Saturdays, 9am to 11am (beginning August 2020 – May 2021)
- Cleveland Institute of Music (Kulas Hall) and CWRU (Wade Hall & Spartan Hall)
The CYWS program is a supplement to your school music program. We are committed to supporting the school band programs, and your school music obligations always take precedence over CYWS events. We are grateful for your support and enthusiasm, which are essential to making our program a continued success.
Attached you will find an audition flyer for our upcoming season. Please forward along to your students and let us know if you have any questions. We look forward to a wonderful season of music making!
Sincerely,
Dan Crain, Melissa Lichtler, Darren Allen

Next year...new schedule?
The really nice thing about a Thursday evening rehearsal is that it will be like a dress rehearsal before the very next day’s performance. This means a stronger performance at the game!
We are also changing things up to improve the Band in as many positive ways as possible. Stay Tuned!
