Sport of the Arts
Program Spotlight: Color Guard and Winter Guard
Music and dance, costumes and props, twirling and tossing all come together in a synchronized display of art and athleticism. Color guard has been dubbed "The Sport of the Arts" because it doesn't fall entirely into the sport or art category.
A color guard is a costume company of four to 30 members trained in dance, drama and the signature skill of color guard - synchronized tossing, twirling and spinning of rifles, sabers, flags and other props. Each color guard's program is designed as a mini-musical: the soundtrack is interpreted through movement and drama, then tied to a theme. The emotional impact can be breathtaking for observers.
A color guard competition is conducted like a gymnastic event. Each color guard unit is allotted eight to ten minutes to set up a floor mat, place props, perform its program and exit the arena. Units that fail to meet this time may lose points. Guard is a spectacular event, even though it is virtually unknown outside its small, but growing number of devoted fans.
If you enjoy music, dancing, acting, and performing live in front of an audience then Colorguard/Winterguard may be your calling. The LEHS Guard program has been a two time Scholastic National A Bronze and Gold Medalist at the WGI World Championships, 5 Time WGI Regional Finalist, and 8 time NTCA Medalist with 4 of those being the State Champions respectfully. If you would like to be part of a Coed competitive organization at Little Elm High School, then please inquire with the Lobo Band Staff. You will learn to spin a Rifle, Sabre, Flag, and various other pieces of equipment. Training begins at the end of the year. If you would like to be part of a great organization, travel and be well recognized, we ask that you contact us. Come be part of the LEHS Winter Guard. Guard is part of the LEHS Band program and Fine Arts at LEHS. They perform at all football games, marching contest, pep rally’s, play-off games, parades, and various other community events. Guard will replace your PE Credit for graduation. Come be part of an organization that is nicknamed “Sport of the Arts.”

LEHS Academic Decathlon - State Bound!!
We are honored to announce that your inaugural Academic Decathlon team won the Region IV championship this past weekend, automatically qualifying us for the state competition! We unseated 9 time consecutive regional winner, Sam Champion High School for top honors, and are currently ranked 9th in the state! I want to express my sincerest gratitude to the teachers of Little Elm and the administration who helped make this team and our accomplishment possible. To all of the teachers who volunteered their time to judge speech and interview and scores essays at our practice meet, we are in your debt! We are not done, however. We leave for state in less than a month to represent Little Elm ISD at the state meet and better our ranking.
Most importantly, I hope that if you see any of the AcDec students in the hall or are lucky enough to have them in class, you please congratulate them on a job well done. I cannot express to you the enormity of this accomplishment. These students did not even know what Academic Decathlon was six months ago, and now they are a contender for the state title.

UIL Solo & Ensemble Contest -
Congratulations to the LEHS Band students participating in the UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest this past Saturday at Liberty High School. In all, forty-four students were awarded a "Superior" rating on solos, with another forty-four students earning a "Superior" rating in ensembles. Eighty-eight superior medals are the most ever earned by students at LEHS. This is a tremendous achievement by our Lobo Band students!
LEHS Winter Guard Results -
Over the past two weekends, the LEHS Winter Guards have competed in their first competitions of the year in their respective classes. The Winter Guard program is a part of the LEHS Band. The Varsity Guard, competing in the Open Class division, won 1st Place at the Arlington Martin Contest. Their score placed them ahead of Coppell, Forney, and Flower Mound High Schools to finish 1st. The JV Guard competed this past Saturday at Lewisville High School in the Regional A division. The JV Guard had a wonderful performance as well, helping them to finish 3rd in their classification. Congratulations to these two outstanding groups of students and their director, Ms. Kristen Zotti.
TENNIS
Please congratulate our varsity squad on an awesome opening tournament last weekend. First off...realize the scope of this tournament, 5A and 6A schools were well represented and powerhouses such as Argyle, Guyer, Iowa Park, Trinity, Bell, and Aledo all brought their A-squads, and we stood toe-to-toe with them all day.
Boys Singles: Ryan Webb and James Robinson have played doubles together, this year they're testing their mental side with singles. Both players came out on fire, but both learned you can't let your guard down for a second in singles. They played into the afternoon and eventually lost to players that got either 1st-2nd or 3rd in their bracket.
Boys Doubles: Dylan Gulliksen and Josh Buliga played for the first time and they both are slated on our JV squad at this time. I was proud of them for not only accepting each other, but also playing hard in what is a different level from the JV environment.
Mixed Doubles: Ela Detecio and Jacob Genuise played together for the first time and ended up 3rd place in the main draw. This is the brains and brawn of our team...you decide which is which on that team. Talia Gonzalez and Brady Longeway also played into the afternoon in their debut as well...something that will help them in the near future.
Girls Doubles: Keila Valladares and Maura Elskamp, also from our JV squad, stepped in and learned that this level is very different, they won a match in the main draw and can't wait for their next tourney.
Girls Singles: Kimberly Velasquez-Villatoro played up from JV also and was able to gain experience by playing 3 total matches, something Coach Roth is really excited about for a rising star. Karen Moreno is playing singles as well this year (after 2 in doubles at varsity level), she played a number of matches as well and progressed into the main draw in the afternoon. Alli Ziehm (yes coach Ziehm's daughter) is a freshman...and she decided to haul off the first place trophy for girls singles. The schools in attendance probably initially said...who's Little Elm, Alli made sure they will remember from now on.
Please congratulate these players if you have them in class or know them.
I've said it before...I'll say it again, we have the greatest team on earth because of the word TEAM that they represent. Once again...teams are spread near and far while their players are on the court...and where are our players, they are glued to the match and rooting on our athletes!! I'm so proud that I never ask WHERE IS OUR TEAM, they're right next to the court where the Lobos are kicking booty, that's where!!
