First Decatur Newsletter of the 2021-2022 Schoolyear!

Hello Gator Families. I am Decatur High School Principal Jamie Tough and I am so very excited to welcome all of our Gators back on September 1st!!!

I want to start out by saying how overwhelmingly great it was to finally see our scholars back on campus this week. I also want to say thank you to all of our leadership scholars and teacher Matthew Paterra for their hard work and preparation this week as we welcomed scholars back to campus for our first Gator Days in 2 years! I also want to say thank you to the coaches, teachers, administrators, deans, secretaries, custodians, counselors, our athletic director and librarian for their hard work planning and coordinating Gator Days.

If you were unable to attend Gator Days this week, that is okay. Your schedule will be available in StudentVue later next week and we will have a picture make-up day the second week of school. More information coming on that.

For all of our new scholars and families, I will be sending out this newsletter on either Friday or Saturday of each week. The messaging is directed to our scholars but all of the content is also important for families to read too. There are often important announcements and deadlines in the newsletter so scholars should start establishing the habit of checking their p12 email daily and make sure they read any messages from the school and district.

As a reminder, in accordance with Gov. Inslee and OSPI direction, we will be opening the year with full face-to-face instruction. We are planning for a safe return that prioritizes learning using guidance from OSPI and the Department of Health.

Bell Schedules:

For your planning, classes at Decatur begin each day at 7:25 AM and release at 1:55 PM. It is recommended that all scholars arrive on campus between 7:00 and 7:15 AM each day to ensure they have enough time to get through any bus or drop-off traffic and make it to class on time. We will have a special bell schedule the first week of school. Class period times are being finalized and will be attached to this newsletter next week.

School Supplies:

School supplies are provided free of charge for all scholars and will be distributed on the first day of school. All your scholar needs is their own back pack! Please visit https://www.fwps.org/Page/2127 to view provided supplies.

Bus route schedule information is available to view at fwps.org. Information will be also provided directly to parents on Monday from Transportation.

As we prepare to return to in-person, here are a few important reminders:

  • Daily health screening attestation is no longer required. However, we do ask that you continue to monitor your child for symptoms and keep your scholar(s) at home if not feeling well
  • All staff and scholars (including those who are fully vaccinated) are required to wear face masks while indoors at all times at our school campus and on the bus. If a scholar doesn't comply with wearing a mask, the school principal will call the parent/guardian to come and pick up their scholar.
  • Social distancing will be practiced in all areas and there will be regular handwashing throughout the day.
  • Breakfast and lunch will be served for our scholars. Students will be seated at a minimum of 3 feet social distancing during meals.

Resources to Support the Transition:

Please continue reading for more information on free school meals for all FWPS scholars and athletics updates.

I hope you all have a safe and relaxing summer and as always, remember the words of former Gator Dom Cook, "It is, and always is, a great day to be a Gator! Yitadee!!!"

Free Breakfast and Lunch for all FWPS Scholars for the 2021-2022 School Year

This year, all FWPS scholars can receive a free breakfast and lunch at school regardless of free or reduced meal qualification.

It is still extremely important for families that may usually qualify to fill out the application. The percentage of Decatur scholars whose families qualify for free or reduced meals impacts the amount of state and federal funding the school qualifies for the following school year. In addition, scholars eligible for free or reduced price meals may also qualify for other services at a reduced or no cost.

For more information and to access the lunch application, click on the following link: https://www.fwps.org/lunchapplication

School-Based Health Center Now Open for Decatur Students

We’re so lucky to have a School Based Health Center that can serve our Decatur High School students’ needs!

Remember, if your child needs medical or mental health services, these are available at no cost to your student. The health center is located on the TAF@Saghalie campus.

Whether your child needs a sports physical, immunizations, primary care, mental health counseling, or other medical needs, make an appointment by calling the TAF@Saghalie School Based Health Center at 253-804-3589. Appointments for in-person, telephone, or virtual visits.

Timely Updates from Superintendent Dr. Pfeiffer

We are excited to welcome our new Superintendent Dr. Danielle Pfeiffer! Dr. Pfeiffer steps into the role from her position as FWPS Deputy Superintendent. Dr. Pfeiffer is committed to supporting all of our scholars, families and our community here in Federal Way. Every Friday, Dr. Pfeiffer will send out a newsletter to all families district-wide. Please be sure to reference her e-Newsletter each week for the most up-to-date information related to our planning for the weeks and school year ahead.
