Insights From Disneyland
My How Things Change!
Happy New Year and welcome back!
This past week our family which consisted of about 17 of us were lucky enough to take a trip to Disneyland. Though it seemed about half of the world had the same idea, we really had a great time and were able to manage the crowds. Cole is getting older and grateful he could share this experience with his many cousins and his aunt and uncle.
One of my favorite things to do anytime I go somewhere is to learn about the history of those places and things that I am seeing. I was enthralled with some of the original models and maps created by the early designers of the park. I did my own research about how Walt Disney launched his now-infamous happiest place on earth and found that it too had some setbacks early on, and much like us we are learning as we go through some failures, but imagine if old Walt had given up when things did not work out as planned?
I've included a link for fun in case you were curious.
Disneyland's Opening Day Was a Total Nightmare They Called "Black Sunday"
I am always amazed at how Disneyland evolves overtime, yet keeps its traditions and stories as a big part of their park. I was able to have a great conversation with my nephew who is thinking about majoring in marketing and business. I could tell marketing is a strength of his because he was really interested in how Disney constantly caters to their clients and attempts to improve the experience as well as constantly creating new attractions to well, you know, attract folks.
I didn't think much about work while I was there but did a little pondering about us all at LaCreole perhaps while I had time waiting in line, my favorite was the Starbucks line:) I think I know our story at LaCreole pretty well, at least I know what our map looked liked twelve years ago and how we have redesigned our park if you will since then. I wonder if we have a common perspective on listening to our park goers and working to enhance their experience over time, not from a critical standpoint but simply as a reflection on how different industries think. Disney is a money maker, we serve kids, but how are our goals similar and how are they different?
A wise man once told me that in our profession we can teach 30 years yet still only teach one, or we can teach more like 25 years if we keep thinking about how to improve our craft. It makes sense, he was a math guy so I just nodded my head, but it holds true and perhaps answers the question of how we at LaCreole can be more like Disneyland.
So, what will our/your map look like in June of 2020...in June of 2025?
Glad you're here!
