Principal Update

March 2022

Whitney Families,

Our first priority is the safety of our students and staff and keeping you informed.

At 2:59 pm Tuesday March 15th, we were notified that a shooting had occured at Eisenhower High School. As a precautionary measure, Whitney Elementary was placed into lockdown. During the lockdown students were kept in their classrooms and all doors were locked until we were advised that it was safe to begin releasing students.

During the lockdown, Whitney administrators went to every door to ensure that all students and staff were safe and secure. We were in constant communication with our Director of Safety and Security, Sara Cordova, the Yakima Police Department, and the Yakima County Sheriff's Office. We also notified parents via ParentSquare of the situation and that students were safe and secure. If you have yet to sign up for ParentSquare HERE is the link to walk you through the set up process.

Please know that the students and staff did a great job during this incident and followed the procedures we have in place for such events. The safety of our students is paramount at all times, just as it is with you. Thank you for your continued support and patience during the lockdown.

Please review the important dates below. We have rescheduled the Hour of Code Event, Spirit Week is next week, parent-teacher conferences are coming up, as well as Kindergarten Registration, and Spring Break.

Thank you for being a part of the Whitney Dream Team!

If you have questions please reach out via telephone (573-1900) or via Let's Talk and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

DOH updates school guidance as mask mandate lifts starting March 12

OLYMPIA – The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) has released new guidance for schools, child care, day camps, and other youth activities, with changes to masking rules effective March 12. This guidance is being announced in coordination with the end of Washington’s masking requirement, as part of the state’s continued COVID-19 recovery efforts.

The Yakima School District is working hard to ensure that requirements are met as they are updated. The full state guidance is available now. To stay up to date visit the Washington State Department of Health Website.

Our students are changing the future with an Hour of Code

Dear Parents,

We live in a world surrounded by technology. And we know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly depend on understanding how technology works.

But only a fraction of us are learning how technology works. Only 51% of all high schools offer computer science.

Our Hour of Code is making a statement that Whitney Elementary is ready to teach these foundational 21st-century skills. To continue bringing programming activities to our students.

This is a chance to change the future of education in Yakima.

See http://hourofcode.com/us/en for details.

Our Hour of Code Event will be March 31st from 2:00 - 3:00, during conference week. We will send out the google meet link to each students email and calendar.

30 prizes will be raffled off during the event. To qualify for the raffle students must log on using their school account. Winners will be announced at the end of the event.
