Report Card Changes for 2021-2022 School Year!
Parents,
As we prepare for Parent-Teacher conferences and the end of the 1st nine weeks, the Teaching and Learning Department would like to make you aware of two report card changes at the elementary level.
First, you will notice that there is no longer a Spelling category on Grades 2-5 report cards. Research demonstrates that Spelling is part of a comprehensive Word Study approach that also includes phonics, phonological awareness, and vocabulary. Word Study is pivotal to both receptive (Reading and Listening) and productive (Speaking and Writing) language. This means that Word Study is both a natural and explicit component of both Reading and Writing instruction. Therefore, any Spelling activity completed in a classroom will be found under the “Language Arts” category.
Additionally, you will not find grades for Science and Social Studies in Grades K-3. These subjects will be integrated into Reading and Math. This is a result of the research on learning loss from COVID that shows a need for more time in core subjects to build strong foundations.
If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher or building principal.
STEM Event Hosted by Girl Scout Troop 1750
Hello Maple Grove parents and students!
We are Girl Scout Troop 1750 and we are hosting a FREE event for Maple Grove Elementary kids in grades K-5 on Wednesday, October 20 from 6:30-8pm. Families will visit activity stations based on science and the methods behind it. Our goal is to show families that science isn’t just for adults in lab coats, but also simple do-at-home projects for families to share. So come as a family to enjoy these fun activities on science, technology, engineering, and math.
If you’d like to join us for this event, please register in advance at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0545aeaa23a7f94-maple Space is limited, so save your spots soon! MGES Student Council is rolling out our first school wide initiative - Socktober!
Maple Grove is proud to participate in Socktober this month, which is a nationwide community outreach effort to make a difference in the lives of the homeless! Each night in the United States, an estimated 600,000 people live on the streets. A small act of love, such as donating a pair of socks, can make a big difference in the lives of our neighbors who are homeless.
We are challenging the students and staff of Maple Grove to help support this mission by bringing in NEW socks of any size, color, or pattern from October 1st - 29th! All socks will be donated to the Wheeler Mission Homeless Shelter.
