Dates of Cold War

After WWII, there was tension in Europe. Germany had lost the war and Germany was divided into 4 parts which were controlled by Great Britain, France, and USA to the west and Soviet Union (Russia) to the east. Germany became West Germany and East Germany. West Germany was a democracy and East Germany was Communist. The Cold War began in 1946 - 1992, with the collapse of the Soviet Union.

NATO vs Warsaw Pact

NATO is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization which is a political and military alliance between the United States, Canada, Great Britain, France, West Germany, other western European countries.

Warsaw Pact was the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation and Mutual Assistance. The treaty was signed on May 9, 1955. The countries represented Eastern Europe communist countries: Soviet Union (Russia), Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, and Romania.
