Message From Principal Engdall

Greetings Shaw Montessori,
Community Survey: The district is conducting a community survey to gather input from parents, community members, students, and staff about the climate and culture of the
district. The survey will be administered beginning March 25 - April 7, 2023.
Visit: phoenixschools.org/survey or scan QR Code below (click on images to enlarge).
I encourage all of you to participate in the study. Thank you.
We are concluding our first week of state testing with our 5th and 8th graders taking the AZSci test. Next week we will do a few makeups then the week of April 3rd we will begin the 3rd-8th grade ELA, Writing and Mathematics testing. That testing will not conclude until the end of April. The testing schedule has been disseminated to you by your child’s teacher. Please make sure that on your child’s testing day they are healthy and present with a water bottle and headphones. If they do not have headphones, we will supply them with a pair. Thank you for doing your part to support our children and a testing environment where Montessori Magic shines through on a standardized test!
This week, all our BIG TRIPS were approved by our governing board. Our 3rd-8th graders will be off on a grand adventure with their peers. These trips are often what our alumnus’s, who return years later for visits will say are some of their fondest memories of their time in our community!
Our 7th-8th grade competitive basketball games begin this week. Good luck to both of our teams! Go Shaw Stars. Schedules posted below.
Our 5th/6th grade district track meet that was scheduled for Tuesday, March 28th has been cancelled. We will let you know if/when it is rescheduled.
We appreciate your attendance at our Site Council/PTA Meeting this past Wednesday. Our PTA is just one of the strong supports that links home and school. These meetings keep the culture and climate of our school vibrant, diverse, and powerful. We look forward to seeing you at our April meeting on Wednesday, April 19th at 6:00. Site Council will be held at 5:30 where we will do an overview of our summer homework plans.
Wishing you the best,
Principal Engdall

Spring State Testing
AASA (Writing, Reading, and Math) for all 3rd to 8th-grade students begins next week. These standardized tests provide a snapshot of how students place on grade-level standards.
The testing calendar is provided below.
To prepare for the test, we recommend students get a good night's rest, have a healthy breakfast, as well as bring headphones, snacks, and water. Please reach out to me or your child's teacher with any questions you may have.
Important Note: Students must submit the test on the same day they start the test. Please do not plan doctor's appointments or early pickups on the day of your child's scheduled test.
Thank you,
Shaily Currie

See Shaw Shine Reporters

This week we took a poll of students in our school and their favorite school lunch. We took a poll from the classes of Mr.Leinbach, Mrs.Chan, Mrs.Wheelington, and the 3rd graders from Ms.Craigs, Ms.Oakley and Ms.Hess.
Schools waste around $18 million of food every year and every day it's around $100,000. Children nutrition programs help feed a large number of children, usually around more than 25 million students. Ohio's Food Service program serves more than 1 million meals a day. Public or nonprofit schools from high schools to daycares can take part in the free food program.
School lunch is a global issue. Children in Italy choose to bring their own food instead of a multi course meal from their school cafeteria which is outrageous in our opinion. There, schools give out 20.1 million lunches a year.
Results of our favorite lunch foods graph is above.

Garden Update

Greetings!
We began our pico de gallo block this week. Pico de gallo translates to “rooster’s beak”. There are many stories about where the name originates. Some say the salsa got its name from the serrano pepper’s likeness to a rooster’s beak. Others say it comes from the verb, picar, which means “to chop” or “to bite”. Some even say the name came from the similarities between the salsa and chicken feed. Whatever the true origin story, one thing is certain- it’s fun to make and delicious.
We also began our chicken incubation this week. The 7th and 8th grades are hosting the incubator this year. When the chicks hatch, we will have the preschool host them for a couple of weeks as we sell them to Shaw families. They are $15 and come with some starter feed. They will start hatching in approximately 17 days.
Construction on our Washington St pollinator’s garden started this week. I am using the tractor to contour the land. We will get a new irrigation install in a couple of weeks and then a HUGE planting on April 19th. Stay tuned for progress photos on that space.
THE BOTTLE CAP COMPETITION IS OVER! Ms. Chan’s and Ms. Stephanie’s classes collected the most bottle caps. They will be awarded with an ice cream party in the spring. Thank you to all the families that donated caps. The mural group is working on the murals and should have the first one finished by May. PLEASE DON’T BRING US ANYMORE BOTTLE CAPS. We have more than enough.
Here is my email in case you need to reach me: james.obrien-moench@phxschools.org
Home Depot gift cards are always appreciated. Continue bringing your aluminum cans, coffee grounds, and eggshells. You can leave them on the table outside the front office, except for the bottle caps. Have your child drop them in their classroom bottle cap bin.
We will also accept any tool donations for the field garden and/or ODE.
Enjoy your weekend!
Mr. Moench
