Marilyn Monroe

The iconic American actress and model.

Younger Life

Marilyn Monroe was born to Martin Edward Mortensen & Gladys Pearl Baker on June 1st, 1926 in Los Angeles. She was given the birth name Norma Jeane Mortenso.

Nude shots from her in 1949 popped up in a calendar which caused her to become known as a ‘sex symbol’. Monroe went to work in a munitions factory in Burbank, California, where she was discovered by a photographer. She was bipolar and had borderline schizophrenia like her mother.

Marilyn's Impact

She brought body-conscious designs to the forefront of fashion and to this day is still a fashion icon. “She really kind of made it OK to be sexually attractive. I think that, especially in costume design, we use some of those elements that are very specific to Marilyn, to heighten a character's sexual attraction” said Ashley Bellet, professor of costume design at Oklahoma City University. Marilyn was a feminist before there was such a word.
