Propagation: Air Layering

  • Sharp knife
  • Toothpick
  • Twist ties
  • Small clear plastic sheet
  • Water
  • 3 to 4 handfuls of sphagnum moss
  • Rooting hormone (optional)


  • Make a slanting cut into the stem (1/3 diameter through)
  • Keep the wound open using a toothpick
  • Push rooting hormone into open wound
  • Saturate the moss with water
  • Wrap the moss around the wounded portion of the stem
  • Wrap a sheet of clear plastic tight around the ball of moss (wrap around twice)
  • Use twist ties to secure plastic
  • Wait to be able to see root development through the moss, and then the newly rooted portion is ready for planting
