Acton Weekly Update 9/28/18
FTCSC Hedgehog Focus
The Hedgehog Concept is based on an ancient Greek parable that states, "The fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing." ... Hedgehogs, however, simplify the world and focus on a single, overarching vision, which they then achieve.

What is your Why?
Curriculum and Instruction
I will begin sharing the Collaboration Agendas with all of you again in Google Classroom for each team to fill out, now that we've all had an opportunity to refresh on Google Classroom with Nadine.
Grades 3-5- Haley showed you all the CFA tracking sheets we will be using. As soon as I get those from her, I'll share with you and Matt will work with your team to input data. I will be coordinating our Collaboration Calendar with assessment dates so that we have planned discussion based on this data.

Get Students Working Together
- Using collaborative groups adds to the value of whole-class and also individual work (Marzano & Hattie).
- Inter-group competition can increase the effect of learning even more (Marzano & Hattie).
For productive groups:
Students need to know all related expectations and procedures.
Students need a reasonable understanding of the content.
Build Students’ Self-Efficacy
- Self-efficacy refers to a student’s belief about their ability to successfully complete a task.
- You can build students’ self-efficacy through praise and expressing your belief that
they can do well (Marzano).
Be genuine
Refer to specific accomplishments related to the task
Counseling Corner
Thank you for your commitment to implementing the Brain Smart Start. I'll be finishing up a Cheat Sheet for each part over the weekend.
Here are some guiding questions and rationale to consider:
The activity to unite as a School Family involves everyone doing something together. It builds connection, fosters a sense of safety and releases endorphins.
1. How will you unite your class?Class chant or song: _________________________________________________________
The activity to disengage stress involves deep breathing and stretching. It prepares the brain for cortical learning and turns off the stress response.
2. How will you help your class disengage stress?
Beginning of the day: _________________________________________________________
Before each transition: _________________________________________________________
During stressful moments: _________________________________________________________
After centers and recess: _________________________________________________________
The activity to connect the students to the teacher and to each other helps to maintain focused attention and the motivation to learn. It also releases oxytocin, which promotes connection and reduces aggression.
3. How will you connect your class?
Each morning: _________________________________________________________
Before a teaching moment: _________________________________________________________
With a difficult student: _________________________________________________________
During transitions: _________________________________________________________
At the end of each day: _________________________________________________________
The activity to commit oneself to learning involves affirmations and positive thinking. It produces serotonin, teaches responsibility, promotes mindful attention and develops the prefrontal lobe.
4. How will you have your class commit?
Individually: _________________________________________________________
As a class: _________________________________________________________
Predetermined groups: _______________________________________________

Thank you to Nadine to coming in and meeting with all grade level teams this week. She shared some excellent resources for you to be using during Daily 5! Please remember that it is important for EVERY student to get access and regular usage of technology so that they are progressing their knowledge and applications. We need students to be proficient on Chromebooks, apps, and websites so that they can safely and efficiently navigate. This is now part of our State-wide assessments.
