Springton Lake Middle School
Every Student. Every Day. No Matter What.
October 30, 2020
As we close out the month of October, it's been a very busy week here at Springton Lake. Students participated in two days of MAP testing and navigated modified schedules with a high degree of success. Students appeared to put forth a great deal of effort with the testing and we look forward to reviewing and sharing their results with you soon. Despite the rain, we were able to squeeze in two days of intramural sports and several of our clubs met this week. Students also had some time this week to "catch-up" on any outstanding assignments as the end of the marking period draws near. At home, many of our students were busy carving and decorating pumpkins for our Pumpkin Decorating Contest. All in all, the week was a success!
Looking ahead to next week, there is NO SCHOOL for students on Monday and Tuesday. Teachers will be involved in professional development activities. Tuesday is, of course, Election Day and some of our students (and teachers) created this short, but important message to share with everyone! There will be material pick-up and Picture Day on Monday for students who will remain fully-virtual for the second marking period. The first marking period ends on Friday, November 6th. Some special area classes will rotate when the new marking period begins on November 9th.
I hope that everyone has a wonderful weekend. Stay safe as you celebrate Halloween, and don't forget to turn back your clocks on Saturday evening before heading to bed. Take care, everyone!
For your reference, the calendar that indicates which days each cohort attends in-person is provided below.
Fully-Virtual Cohort - Material Pick-up & Picture Day on Monday, 11/2
A second material and supply pick-up for students who are planning to remain fully-virtual for the 2nd marking period will take place on Monday, November 2nd from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. We have also arranged for Life Touch to be here on Monday for Picture Day for these students. These photographs will be used for the Yearbook and for student identification cards. Students should enter through the Cafeteria doors. Please make every effort to come by so that students have what they need for the next marking period. Students unable to stop by on Monday will have the option to have their photographs taken on the regular pictures days - November 11th and 12th. Unclaimed materials will also be placed in the vestibule for pick-up during normal school hours.
Pumpkin Decorating Contest - The WINNERS!
Thank you to the 50 students and families who participated in this year's Pumpkin Decorating Contest sponsored by Student Council. The designs and creativity were simply amazing! Everyone enjoyed looking at the pumpkins as they arrived to school throughout the week. The competition was stiff and the judging was very difficult. In the end, the following winners were selected...
First-place WINNERS of a $50 gift card are...
AJ Birney, Trevor Dzien, & Noelle Sok
Second-place WINNERS of a $25 gift card are...
Travis Dercole & Will Walters
Congratulations! Prizes will be distributed next week.
COVID-19 Questions & Assistance
Parents & guardians who have COVID-related questions during the school day should contact our School Nurse, Ms. Hartner by email or phone - 610-627-6512. For COVID-related questions after school hours, you can reach a school district nurse. Contact information is located on the RTMSD website under District Reopening, After Hours-Covid Questions and Answers. There is a nurse available in the mornings before school from 5am to 7am, in the evenings during the week from 4pm to 10pm, and on Sunday evenings from 4pm to 10pm.
IMPORTANT REMINDER - Daily Student Symptom Screening
Parents & Guardians are required to complete an electronic symptom screening for each student. The screening will only be required for days that students are scheduled to attend school in-person. On these days, parents should look for an early morning email (check SPAM) from Rose Tree Media School District. Thank you for your patience this week as we transitioned to a new software application for the screening. Please make note of the following important items:
1. Please have handy your child's student ID # (lunch code) as this will be required in order to complete the screening.
2. For hybrid students, please complete the symptom screening on the days that your child should be attending in-person EVEN if they will be absent or have a need to work virtually on that day.
3. Please complete the screening PRIOR to 7:30am. A report is run at that time and students who have not submitted the screening are removed from the classroom until the response is received. I know that it is stressful and uncomfortable for students to be pulled from class.
The symptom screening is just one more way that we are working to keep students safe at school.
EVERY Student Eats FREE - Breakfast & Lunch
The Rose Tree Media School District has been approved to offer FREE breakfast and lunch to ALL students through the end of the current school year. Students will also be able to take home a meal for days that they are learning at home. Students participating in the fully-virtual cohort will also be able to pick-up a bundle of meals. A la carte snack items will still be available for purchase. Visit the Food Services website for more details.
State-mandated Health Screenings
State-mandated health screenings will be starting in November. All students will have their height, weight, and vision screened. In addition, students in 7th grade will receive a scoliosis and hearing screening. Please contact Ms. Hartner, our School Nurse, with any questions about this process.
1st Marking Period Ends on November 6th
The first marking period will end on Friday, November 6, 2020. We anticipate that report cards will be published in HAC by the following Friday - November 13th. While students were given some in-school "catch-up" time this week, please encourage them to do a final review of their current grades. Students should use the time off from school on Monday and Tuesday to complete any remaining assignments. Despite the unusual year, the report cards that we issue in a few weeks will be "normal" and will reflect students' learning, work, engagement, and participation since the start of the year.
Career Day - Parent Volunteers Needed
The Guidance Department is planning to host a virtual Career Day for our students on Friday, December 18th from 8am to 10am. We are in need of parent volunteers who would be willing to present to our students. Volunteers will have the option to pre-record a presentation or present LIVE to students via Zoom. The success of our Career Day program is directly related to our ability to secure presenters from a broad range of careers and occupations. If you are able to help, please complete this very brief survey form. One of our school counselors will then be in touch with more specific information. Thank you for your consideration and assistance!
School Picture Day
Picture Day for students is coming soon! All students are photographed annually by Life Touch, our official school photographer. These photos are used for our school records, for student identification cards, and for inclusion in the Yearbook. Families also have the option to purchase additional photographs. Students will be receiving information in their Homerooms. Families may also order photo packages online by going to the Life Touch website and using the picture day identification code - EVTKCQH8N.
