Hydrogen's symbol is H and it contains one proton and one electron. It is a gas in its normal state and has a atomic mass of 1.00794 grams. Hydrogen is a nonmetal and its atomic number is 1. It doesn't belong to a family on the periodic table.

Henry Cavendish discovered hydrogen in 1766. It originates from the Greek words "hydro" and "genes" meaning "water" and "generator".
