Maire newsletter: January 22 Edition

Dear Maire Families,

This week has been filled with progress. Throughout this year we’ve been adapting to changes. We are excited to extend our day next week and bring specials back into the building. As specials return, we will be diligent about adhering to our safety protocols to ensure a safe learning environment for all. This opportunity will allow students to shine in new ways again. We know that each child finds passions in ways that interest them, whether that be art, music, sports, language or books. Students will have specials on an ABCD calendar, rotating every 4th school day. We recognize that with a cohort system in place, there will not be an even or consistent distribution of specials opportunities, but it is better than no specials at all. Please remember, our day will start at 8:20am and end at 3:38pm. Our youngest learners (K and Y5) will still get out about 5 minutes before everyone else to ensure their safe pickup. This is a new routine that will take some getting used to.

Another celebration this week is the swearing in of our first female vice president. Regardless of political views, it is a fact that our country has a long history of barriers for a multitude of marginalized people. When Kamala Harris was sworn in, little girls everywhere instantly had someone who showed them anything is possible. On top of that, she is the first woman of African American and Asian American descent. Whether you like the outcome of the election or not, we need to celebrate that people, particularly our youth in America, have a new role model to show them that they too can achieve their dreams.

Stay safe. Thanks for your support this year and every year.

Important notes from the Office

As we prepare to have the students back for an extended day (specials included), please remember these important things:
  • Students go out for recess twice a day, so make certain they have appropriate winter clothing for the day. Winter hat, mittens, snow pants, and boots are all important items to pack each day.
  • Please initial ALL clothing so that if anything is lost, we can find the proper owner.
  • Please use our QR code (located in the vestibule) if you need to pick up a student early or drop off late. This helps us to keep track of the students while maintaining a safe distance for our parents and office staff.

One Book, One School Sponsored by GTS

Next week is our final week of our One Book event. We want to thank Global Telecom Solutions and our Family Literacy Partners again for making this event possible. Our goal was to create a shared experience where all families are able to come together to hear a great story and have conversations around books.

Next week we will have two sets of trivia and on Thursday and Friday we will have Adopt an Animal Days here at Maire. Students are encouraged to bring $1 and their favorite small stuffed animal. Proceeds will go to the Dian Fosse Gorilla Fund to help gorillas in Africa.

You can use this Family Resource to help, which includes the letter and schedule, some optional family activities, and ways to access the book digitally.

Makerspace Zoom Thursday and Friday

The virtual Maire Makerspace Class will be happening every Thursday & Friday!

This is an optional zoom class led by Mrs. Kramer.

At the meeting students will design, tinker, and create something based on the design challenge (details will be sent out each Monday). This is a fun way to engage with other students and showcase your creativity and problem-solving skills.

Each week students will be given a list of household supplies to gather & bring to the zoom meeting. If you are not able to gather all of the materials, we will have some kits created plus a bin of extra single supplies available in our vestibule for you to pick up.

Our Maire Makerspace Class zooms will be for all students (Y5-4th) from 10:00 - 10:25 on Thursday (Cohort B) and 10:00 - 10:25 on Friday (Cohort A).

Please consider joining this optional Makerspace zoom on your asynchronous mornings. You can access the zoom via the link below and teachers will try to post it in their Schoology accounts as well.

If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Kramer (

GPPSS meal distribution at GP North and GP South

Free meals distributed Wednesdays 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

From 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. every Wednesday, families can pick up a week’s worth of meals for students under age 18 or those receiving special education services under age 26. Simply drive through at North High School or South High School. In order to keep this as safe as possible for everyone, these meals will be served as “grab and goes” to be taken home for consumption. Free lunch will be served at all schools for students who order when attending in person. Free breakfast will be served at Defer, Mason, Monteith, Parcells, Pierce, North and South when students attend school in person. This is made possible through an extension of the USDA grant.

Free and Reduced Meal Applications:

Important: Please complete an application each school year if you think you might be eligible as this greatly impacts the district’s ability to access state and federal funding sources. This information is confidential.
