November 8, 2023 - NEWSLETTER
Estimadas familias de Woodcrest,
It’s hard to believe it’s already November! We have a couple solid weeks of learning before Thanksgiving Break. As I walk through the halls and visit classrooms, I have been so appreciative of the learning and engagement in our classrooms.
Our teachers and staff work so hard to bring authentic learning experiences to our students – it is so rewarding to see how their hard work impacts our students. I see students learning, engaging, smiling and feeling proud of the work they have accomplished every day. Thank you, teachers!
Embedded in the learning experiences our students have each day, I can see our work around the competencies coming to life. I see more authentic tasks and students applying their learning to real-life situations. In Sra. Fasanaro’s 2nd grade classroom, students recently created their own board games as an authentic assessment of their learning around addition and subtraction problem solving in math. Students created the addition and subtraction problems, rules of the game, and pieces to play. This made learning fun, accessible and real.
On Thursday, Nov. 9, at 6:30 p.m., we will test our emergency notification system. This is the system we would use for snow days or any other notification that needs to go out to families from Spring Lake Park Schools. See more information in the newsletter about this and please ensure that you are getting information how you prefer. While the weather is great right now, we know winter will be here too soon!
Have a great week!
In Partnership,
Jaime Nymann
Principal
Vision screening coming soon
The health office will be conducting vision screenings in the next few weeks. This year, we are excited to partner with the Spring Lake Park Lions Club. They will be bringing trained volunteers to use a vision spot screener to screen students for potential vision issues. If you do NOT want your child to participate in vision screening, please call the health office at 763-600-5804 by November 9, 2023.
Test of district’s notification system to happen tomorrow, Nov. 9
Winter weather is soon upon us which means it is time to check Spring Lake Park Schools’ emergency notification system. The district will be testing the system on Thursday, November 9 at 6:30 p.m. Depending on your communication preferences, you will receive an email, text message, voicemail and/or push notification from the SLP mobile app.
If you do not receive the message on your preferred device or if you need to update your phone number or email address, visit the Stay Connected page and click on the Notification System accordion to find directions.
If you have any questions, please contact communications@district16.org.
COVID Booster and Flu Clinic - Thursday, Nov. 16
Spring Lake Park Schools, in partnership with Cub Pharmacy, is hosting another vaccine clinic Thursday, November 16, 4-7 p.m. at the Spring Lake Park School District Services Center (1415 81st Ave NE, Spring Lake Park, MN 55432). 2-Way Texting with School Staff Coming Soon
This month, we will begin using a tool called "Talking Points" to text with parents and guardians. We will start using the tool specifically to follow up on student absences and attendance. We expect to expand the use of this tool to teachers for classroom communication as the year progresses.
Talking Points supports real-time translation. Families can text in their native and/or preferred language and communicate with staff using their preferred language.
There is nothing parents and guardians need to do to receive messages as basic SMS text messages. If you choose to, you may download the Talking Points app. The app and website are not required to receive and send text messages with school staff. Please know that if you download the app, you will no longer receive SMS texts, but will receive messages through the app instead.
Our school staff look forward to the ways this form of communication can help support more real-time connections to support student learning and success. You can learn more about Talking Points on their website. If you have questions, contact communications@district16.org.
