Dear Shimek Families,
As we begin our journey to add new spaces and make upgrades to existing parts of the building, we will be looking for help in a number of different ways as we move forward. A large part of the Shimek project, which is slated to start in June of 2020, will include the addition of a new gymnasium.
With that, we are looking for someone with graphic design experience who would be willing to work with us on a new Shimek Shark logo that we will not only be able to paint at center court on our gym floor, but one that we could start to put on everything from t-shirts to drink holders to the web. If you have such experience or know someone who does and would like to volunteer to help with this en devour, please email me at: pisarik.chris@iowacityschools.org ! Thank you very kindly for considering this request and have a great day!
Most sincerely,
Chris Pisarik

Dear Parent or Guardian,
Recently the number of students missing school due to illness has been on the rise. The illnesses are varied, but Influenza has been present and remains a concern. Below is some information about influenza symptoms and steps that might help in prevention.
The following are some of the symptoms of Influenza:
· Fever (it is important to note not everyone with the flu has a fever)
· Cough
· Sore Throat
· Runny or stuffy nose
· Body aches
· Headache
· Chills
· Fatigue
· Sometimes diarrhea and vomiting
The following are a few things we can to do to prevent illness:
· Good hand washing
· Clean-all common surfaces, especially if experiencing symptoms of the flu/illness.
· Cover-your cough or sneeze with the inner part of your elbow/arm or with a Kleenex. Always wash hands following coughing or sneezing.
· Keep children home that are ill.
If you suspect you or your child has Influenza, we encourage you to see your healthcare provider. Our district policy requires students to stay home until they are fever, diarrhea, and vomit free for 24 hours without the use of medication. When calling in your child’s absence, it would be helpful if you identify the symptoms of your child’s illness so that we can track illnesses that are circulating in the school. Also, please notify the office if your child has a confirmed laboratory test.
For more information on influenza, you can visit the following CDC website:

Grades 3, 4 and 5 ELP Parent Nomination
The yearly screening of students for participation in the Extended Learning Program (ELP), the elementary program for gifted and very high ability students, is underway for the 2018-2019 school year. This program is appropriate for students who are at the highest academic levels in their grade. Students can enter this screening pool by Iowa Assessments scores, teacher nomination or parent nomination. More information is available on the district website: https://ia01903939.schoolwires.net/Page/293. Only grades three through five are included in this screening process. Kindergarten and first grade students are being screened for ELP enrichment services through in-class lessons and collaboration with the classroom teacher throughout the school year. All second grade students will be screened in Spring 2019. Parents will receive notification about second grade screening when it is scheduled at their child’s school. No parent or teacher nominations are necessary for grades K-2. If you would like to nominate your third, fourth or fifth grade child to be tested for ELP services, please complete a parent information form. Forms will be available online between February 22nd and March 29th, 2019 at https://goo.gl/forms/WcQSp5kc1bJFcBc83. Paper forms will be available in the school office during the same time. No forms will be accepted after March 29th, 2019 at 4:00 PM.

The Iowa City Community School District Board of Directors
The Iowa City Community School District Board of Directors approved new elementary attendance areas for the 2019-20 school year. The new boundaries were approved during their November 27 board meeting.
The updated maps can be found on the District website at the following link: www.IowaCitySchools.org/DistrictMaps.
In addition, the District’s Attendance Area Look-Up links have been updated to reflect the approved boundary changes. The links can be found on the District website at the following link: www.IowaCitySchools.org/AttendanceAreaLookUp.
Junior high and high school students may also be impacted by these changes. Please be sure to check the Attendance Area Look-Up link above to determine if changes to the elementary boundaries have affected your student.
