Start with Hello

Next week the Coakley Middle School is starting a new initiative aligned with our Social Emotional Learning objective called Start with Hello. The premise of the program is to make our students aware of members of the school community that might look or feel isolated in order to reach out and find ways to be inclusive. The objective for the students is to learn ways to reach out to these students and that initial connection usually "starts with hello".

All week we will be doing activities that highlight what students should look for to identify loneliness in others, building their level of empathy for their peers, and helping them develop the skills they need to reach out to students that might feel left out or lost at school. Our goal with this initiative is to create an inclusive environment for all students.

This program was developed by The Sandy Hook Promise and will be taking place at a variety of schools all over the country next week. We will have an assembly on Tuesday afternoon sponsored by the foundation. I will include a parent information pamphlet with the newsletter and more will be available during open house this Tuesday night.

Next week - ask your student how can they "Start with Hello" to make CMS an inclusive place to go to school!

Big picture

Open House Tuesday!

Hopefully you have received an email from your child's team that included the schedule for Open House. The overall time for Open House is 6:00pm -8:00pm and it starts at 6:00pm with a few remarks from me (the principal) in the auditorium. The schedule then differs depending upon your child's team. Some teams are doing group presentations while others are presenting individually. All the team schedules work together. If you two children, you will be able to see both sets of team teachers and some specialists. If you have more then two - we may need to schedule you some extra time on another day!

Here at CMS we believe meeting with parents is very important and will work with you to make sure that you get to meet your child's teacher.

It is also important to note that this is not a parent conference and teachers will not be able to discuss individual children on this night. If you need to meet with your child's team before parent conferences in November you can contact your guidance counselor.

Survey of Secondary School Parents/Guardians

Impact Norwood and the Norwood Public Health Department are conducting our 2nd Annual survey of parents/guardians of 6th - 12th graders. The purpose of this survey is to help us learn more about parent/guardian beliefs and perceptions regarding underage drinking and substance use. Your candid feedback will enable us to structure and implement targeted prevention initiatives to enhance the health and safety of Norwood youth. The results of this survey will be shared with you through our website and during the next academic year through health promotion activities and community-wide messaging.
