Ryan's Story--Anti-Bullying & Suicide Prevention Assembly and Evening Parent Program
Tamanend Middle School takes proactive steps to curb bullying, problem that is found in schools everywhere. We have recruited Mr. John Halligan to conduct a presentation on October 25, 2018 for our students. He will relay his own tragic experience as a Dad whose 13 year old son took his own life in 2003, after incessant bullying by peers since the 5th grade, both in school and online. Mr. Halligan further shares that Ryan wrestled with underlying mental health issues and depression and that these factors contributed to Ryan’s vulnerability and ultimate suicide. His story is riveting and powerful, and reminds students that there is a face, a person, a heart, on the other end of the screen.
His presentation will begin with a short video collection of home movie clips and still
pictures of Ryan. John will then begin to tell the story of Ryan and the factors that led up
to his son’s suicide. The students will gain a perspective from inside a family of a child
who is a victim of bullying and cyber bullying. They will also gain awareness about the
signs and risk of teenage suicide and how best to help a friend. As part of Mr. Halligan’s
presentation, students will have the chance to ask him questions. We encourage you to visit a website named for his son: http://www.ryanpatrickhalligan.org/ for more information. In addition, we will hold a parent presentation by Mr. Hannigan at Klinger Middle School in Southampton on October 25, 2018 at 7:00 PM. This parent presentation is open to all Klinger Middle School and Tamanend Middle School parents.
Reminder--Help Us Recognize Veterans in our Community
As Veterans Day approaches, Tamanend Middle School would like to honor those who have served our country. On Monday, November 12th we will hold our Veterans Day Assembly. We would like this presentation to be meaningful not just for our students, but also for local veterans in our community. As such, if you have the email addresses of friends or family who have served in the armed forces who may be interested in joining us that morning, please send this information to Jeff Klein (jklein@cbsd.org) by November 1st. Thank you.
Fashion Week
Fashion Week has come to Tamanend! 9th grade French 2 students have spent the last few weeks studying the history of French fashion including many infamous Parisian designers (Chanel, Vuitton, Lacoste), French Fashion Week, the bi-annual sales, and the many popular department stores such as Galeries Lafayette and Le Bon Marché. They also studied clothing and accessory vocabulary and learned how to comment on the use and style of different items using direct object pronouns! Today, they held their annual fashion show where each student modeled and presented a unique ensemble! Tout le monde était très chic!!
The Next Meeting of the Tamanend Parent Book Club is November 7
Join us for the Tamanend Parent Book Club. This year, we will be reading Raising Kids to Thrive (2015) by Kenneth R. Ginsburg, MD. The book describes "the Lighthouse Parenting Strategy" in which parents balance unconditional love and high expectations with the goal of raising resilient and happy children. This book club will follow a "no-pressure" format in which the facilitator will present a summary of the chapter and open the floor for discussion. We will share resources and ideas with the goal of helping the entire Tamanend parent community navigate the challenges of raising adolescents.
Meetings are held at 6:30 in the Tamanend Library

Please email Dr. Brian Caughie at bcaughie@cbsd.org if you are interested in participating.
Help is Down the Hall--Tamanend Student Assistance Team
The Tamanend SAP (Student Assistance Program) Team is a group of trained faculty members who can connect students with appropriate help and resources if they show signs of struggling with mental health concerns or alcohol/substance use. If you notice concerns such as major changes in behavior or mood, drop in achievement, or use of drugs or alcohol, then you may consider a SAP referral. When the team receives a referral, we gather more information to determine if there is a need for intervention and further assessment. The information is confidential, and the process is for the purpose of offering help. Anyone can refer a student they are concerned about.
Referrals can be made at this Referral Link or by contacting a SAP member. Members of the SAP Team are:
MRS. BARLOW
MRS. CAMMANN
SRA. CORSINO
