WHES Newsletter
Monday, February 22nd - Friday, February 26th, 2021
Hello Westport Community,
We heard you! You are receiving a lot of emails and calls from the District, Superintendent, school, etc. So, we have modified our general mass communication protocol for Westport. It is:
1- Schoology Group updates will be for quick updates about events, free resources or training. (ACTION: Please make sure you are a member of our Westport Heights Community Schoology Group. GO to LMS.LAUSD.NET Access CODE: F4SD-8VW5-M2FMJ)
2- WHES Newsletter will come out only as needed for general long-term information. For easy access to our latest newsletter, just go to our school website at WESTPORTHEIGHTS.ORG. No new news means no new newsletter. For calendar highlights use Google Calendar. We send the newsletter by automated email, text, and phone call if you have an updated Emergency Card on file.
3- Google Calendar will be available as a general calendar for what is happening at the school. The office, principal, counselor, and community rep will add to the calendar the items that are events school-wide. (ACTION: You can add Google Calendar to your device using this link https://calendar.google.com/calendar/u/0?cid=bXltYWlsLmxhdXNkLm5ldF9jbGFzc3Jvb205YzQ1MjdiM0Bncm91cC5jYWxlbmRhci5nb29nbGUuY29t)
4. Chat with the Principal will not be weekly. It will be as information or resources need to be shared with the community.
5. School-Wide Assembly for all WHES students, staff, and families. The regular schedule will be every Monday at 9am. This assembly connects the community with events, awards, and school reminders. (Note: When a holiday falls on a Monday, the next Tuesday at 8:30am will be the time of the assembly.)
6. Your child's teacher will still continue to use their regular methods of communication they have been using all year. They have office hours during the school week.
If you have any questions about how, where, and when the school-wide communications will go out, please contact the school.
Kind regards,
Mrs. Hughes

Westport Heights Elementary School: Core Values
Caring can be shown in many ways at a school. One of the ways to share Kudos across our community is to give KUDOS. When you care, you can "...spend time emphasizing the positive experiences... Just like you say “thank you” to a cashier for your change (aka “just doing their job”), giving a quick appreciation is polite, respectful, and an important part of building...relationships. It’s nice to know you are appreciated, even when it’s just the smaller moments!" [excerpt from KudosNow.com] See our Kudos of the Week below to highlight a few of those moments at WHES...
Kudos: Thank you Parents! WHES Cares. We want to take the time to give KUDOS to parents: 1- Parents who attended the Chat with the Principal and stayed connected! 2- Parents who plan events for the rest of the school like Valentine's Grab and Go and Craft-making. | Kudos: Thank you Staff! - Lessons To Support Black History Month Teaching
Each year, February provides an opportunity to introduce classroom discussions and reflections around the role that Black Americans have played in shaping our nation. Because Black history is an integral part of American history, we are sharing resources from iCivics, as well as partner organizations, to support learning about Black history this month and year-round.
Also, Discovery has resources purchased by LAUSD through 2022-2023. Sign in through Google using your LAUSD single sign-on to access African American Discovery Channel HERE There is a 5-minute video sharing the overview of the resource HERE
4. HAND2MIND MATH TRAINING:
This 30-minute asynchronous session will introduce you to the MATH Student Kit and instructional materials. We’ll unpack the contents of the kit, explore the kit materials, model an activity, and discuss ways to integrate the kit materials and activities in both synchronous and asynchronous learning environments. It is recommended that teachers have their grade level kit with them as they view the training video.
