The Little Viking Newsletter

February/March 2019

Unbelievably, the school year is already halfway over! Second semester is the time in which we see the most growth from the students. Review of the previous year has taken place and students are being introduced to new concepts on a regular basis. Students are putting together several skills and are focusing on application. Even though performance on standardized tests is important, we don’t want students to just be able to perform in a rote manner. We want them to make connections, and to apply learning to everyday life.

We are also already looking forward to next year! Appointments are now being taken for our Kindergarten and Preschool screenings to take place February 25-28. All Tri-Valley children turning 5 before September 1, 2019, who will be entering kindergarten next fall will need to be signed up for a kindergarten screening. All Tri-Valley children who turn 3 on or before the dates of the screenings are encouraged to participate in our preschool screenings. (Children already enrolled in the ECE or Pre-K classrooms DO NOT need to be rescreened.) To schedule an appointment for your child to be screened, please call the Tri-Valley Elementary office at 378-2031.

3rd Grade Illinois Assessment of Readiness Testing-Very Important!!!

The IAR testing will be administered this year from March 11-15. Our 3rd grade students will be testing 1 hour each day for all 5 days. It is vital that all students are in attendance during these days. Please do not schedule doctor or dentist appointments or vacations during this week. The IAR will be given annually to all students attending Illinois public schools in grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. At TVES, students in 3rd grade will be tested in the areas of reading and mathematics.

Summer Mini Camps and Full Daycare

Interested in summer mini camps or full daycare for your children??? This is an exciting addition to our elementary programming. The students will be able to attend weekly enrichment mini camp programs which will last 2 hours each morning from 9:00-11:00, or the children may attend full daycare from the hours of 7:00 am-5:00 pm. This year, if you only need to send your children to summer daycare only on specific days of each week, you can sign up for the daily rate! Summer mini camp information will be posted closer to summer. If you need to sign up for this program, you may do so here.

Updates and Reminders

  • Information regarding school closings or early dismissals due to severe weather may be obtained by checking the following: WJBC AM 1230, WBNQ FM 101.5, WEEK/ Channel 25, our website, and School Messenger phone calls and emails
  • Please make a plan for early dismissals. Make sure your child knows what to do in case of an early dismissal. It is sometimes difficult for students to respond to last minute messages.

  • Please remember that we need a note if your child is doing something different at the end of the day. Sometimes children get their days confused and think they are to be picked up when they are not. If a parent is not here when the bus comes and we don’t have a note, the child will ride the bus. The more informed we are, the better!

  • With the weather turning colder, please be sure to put your children’s names inside every jacket, coat, hat, and pair of mittens. Every year we donate a large number of items that were never claimed from the lost and found. If the temperature or wind chill is below 20 degrees or if there is precipitation, the children will have recess inside.
