Social and Emotional Learning
This month's focus is on learning to appreciate our differences. Learning to appreciate our differences helps us develop empathy, assist in problem-solving and conflict resolution. The newsletter below contains activities and read-alouds for families to encourage exploring differences around the world which increases perspective taking, a part of empathy.
Language Workshop
Essential Question: How do we find the answers to our questions?
This week we began Unit 5 in Language Workshop, a unit that focuses on inquiry. The initial book in this unit, Speeding Up and Slowing Down, was a nonfiction book that provided us with some important background information about motion. We discussed speed, friction and the forces of push and pull. Throughout this unit, we will read both fiction and nonfiction texts that relate to the idea of motion.
Reading Workshop
Writing
On Monday we began our new writing unit. In this unit we will be writing How To books. We will also continue working hard on stretching out the sounds in words, putting spaces between our words, spelling high frequency words correctly and adding punctuation.

Valentine's Day
On Friday, February 14th, we will be having a Friendship party!
With this special day just a week away, we are asking you and your child to create a Valentine mailbox at home. A shoe box with a removable lid would be perfect, but any flat-bottomed container approximately that size would be fine.
You are welcome to decorate the mailbox any way you and your child wish. Please cut a 2” X 6” opening in the lid so that valentines can be dropped inside. The children will be taking out and looking at their valentines at school. If your child’s valentine mailbox does not have a removable lid, he/she will need to reach inside to take out the valentines; please be sure the opening is large enough for your child’s hand.
Please send the mailbox and valentines to school on Wednesday, Feb. 12th.
Enjoy this activity with your child, and as always, thank you for your cooperation! If you have any questions, please be sure to contact us.
Six Flags
Six Flags Reading Program
For completing 6 hours of reading outside of school time students in kindergarten through grade 5 are eligible to earn a free ticket for Six Flags Great America. There is a NEW feature this year - electronic Reading Logs. Adults will register and log their child(ren)’s reading time into an online reading log directly on Six Flags’ website. Families will have the ability to track their child’s progress during the program. Also NEW this year is an extended program deadline of April 16th, leaving more time to complete the reading minutes.
Register using this link:
You will need the teacher code for each child that you register
Krahn - FT6DY
Miszewski - 2VWK2
Relich - JTR3B
Theiler - U9BUB
There are no reading logs to return this year; everything will be done online. Tickets will be distributed by teachers in mid-May, once the tickets have been sent by Six Flags.
