Deer Families
Deer Hill School News . May 13 2022
Dear Deer Hill Families,
Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'" The Deer Hill community has an answer at the ready with the amazing work we accomplished on May 4th through our volunteer night at the End Hung New England warehouse. Final stats from that endeavor: almost 160 volunteers packaged 42,552 meals which equaled $14,893 worth of product. These meals are on their way to Poland where they will feed Ukrainian refugees who have been displaced form their homes. Whether stickering food bags at school (an ongoing project), attending the community service night, or showing spirit by wearing Star Wars swag or Ukrainian colors, Deer Hill students have demonstrated that they show up for others!
All the best,
Alexandra L. Sullivan
Principal, Deer Hill School

Need to Knows
- There is a lot of buzz around the return of the CEF Spelling Bee! Please see the flyer below. Registration closes May 16.
- It is so exiting to have snack options in our school cafeteria, especially Friday ice cream! Thank you for taking time to remind your children that while "sharing is caring," they should not be purchasing treats for their friends.
- As promised, there are some new additions to the important dates listed in this newsletter with more to come. Thank you for making note of ones that are relevant to your family.
Keeping the Joy (happenings at Deer Hill)
- All Deer Hill students enjoyed an engaging Techsploration assembly today which focused on science principles behind weather phenomenon. 5th graders then took a deeper dive into concepts of force and motion with hands on workshops. Thank you, PSO!
- This week our last session of enrichment programming concluded. One course that was extremely popular was Skippers Spread the News. These dedicated journalists, led by adjustment counselor, Mrs. Dolan, worked hard to get the latest scoop and kept Deer Hill staff and students updated through morning announcements.
- Last Friday, we had our first all school assembly in over two years! As part of our partnership with MassDot, students were led through an important review of bicycle and pedestrian safety tips. School Resource Officer Greg Taylor and Transportation Director Ray Miscioscia also offered their expertise on safety reminders specific to our neighborhood streets and bus safety.
- We love our parent experts! Some have pretty impressive skillzzzz, like the Dohertys, who presented to Mrs. Johnston's class and shared their extensive knowledge of beekeeping.
- Our classes have been back in the garden with Farmer Jon Belber from Holly Hill. This season's planting is extra special as we'll be harvesting it for a Salad Day in our own cafeteria! Speaking of of our garden space, things are moving along with the implementation of our CEF courtyard learning space grant. With the help of parent, Chris Kennedy, Jon Belber, and 5th grade teacher, Mr. Nee, the layout of the space is taking shape with plans to start work in July.
- Cinco de Mayo was extra special for Deer Hill staff thanks to a delicious lunch provided by the PSO. Thank you so much for that treat as well as all of the ways teachers were celebrated during Teacher Appreciation Week!
