A Weekly Update from Perkiomen Valley Middle School West

A Word from Mr. Creeden

I hope you and your family are well. We concluded a busy week at West as we welcomed our 7th graders back into the building, continued our MAP testing for 6th and 8th grade, and had our picture days this past Tuesday and Thursday. Picture retake day is scheduled for Monday December 14th for those that are interested. More information about picture retake day will be shared closer to the 14th. This week we conclude MAP testing, share a couple more hybrid updates, prepare for parent/teacher conferences and much, much more.

As you may be aware, the Montgomery County Office of Public Health has ordered all Montgomery County school districts and private schools to move to virtual instruction for the two-week period of Nov. 23 to Dec. 4, with a scheduled return-to-school date of Dec. 7, Montgomery County Health Department School Closure Order 11-13-20. This is in response to a surge in COVID-19 cases throughout the county and the anticipation that there could be even more cases following the Thanksgiving holiday.

While the majority of students maximize their school experience when they are able to attend school in-person, we respect and understand the County’s decision to shift all public and private schools to virtual instruction. In addition to increasing incidence and positivity rates across the region, we are observing increased hospitalizations and ventilator usage. Given our experience in September with everyone learning virtually, we believe we are in a strong position to transition back and continue instruction with little interruption for students.

In an effort to support your planning, here is what you can expect over the next several weeks:

  • The week of Nov. 23, there is no school for students due to parent/teacher conferences and the Thanksgiving holiday. This was already on the district’s calendar. Conferences will continue as planned Nov. 23-24, since they are virtual. Nov. 25-27 schools are closed for the Thanksgiving holiday.
  • Prior to or by Nov. 20, students should make sure that they take home from school what they need to learn remotely (i.e., Chromebook, text books, other instructional materials). There are no scheduled grab-and-go events for the weeks of Nov. 23 and Nov. 30. If you have technology needs, please reach out to your child’s building with specific questions or submit a ticket to helpdesk@pvsd.org.
  • Secondary schedule during virtual period: Effective Nov. 30th, hybrid and virtual students will follow their regular schedules remotely and learning will be synchronous. North Montco Technical Career Center students will be virtual as well. Attendance will be recorded.
  • Special Ed Services: Effective Nov. 30th, all special education services will be delivered remotely. No students will be reporting on-site. If you have specific questions about your child’s accommodations, please reach out to your case manager.
  • Athletics and activities: The official start to the winter sports season is slated for Dec. 7 for middle school. At this time, it is not clear whether or how this date will be adjusted, so we will share updates when we learn more. Extra-curricular clubs are not permitted to meet in person during the two-week virtual period. However, virtual meetings are permitted.
  • Food: Food distribution will be offered next week at the regular times and locations. On Thursday, Nov. 19, and Friday, Nov. 20, food will be provided to cover meals from Nov. 20 to Nov. 24, since no meals will be distributed the week of Nov. 23. The regular food distribution schedule will resume Monday, Nov. 30. Please see our website for details on hours and locations.
  • Any district or district-related meetings scheduled to occur during the two-week virtual period will be conducted online via Zoom. Please refer to our district website calendar for meeting links and other details.

Monday, Dec. 7, is our scheduled return date for in-person instruction for students participating in the half day or hybrid models. We will confirm details associated with our return in future messages, based on guidance from the County. The County’s order does reference the potential for an “extension” after Dec. 6. In the event this would occur, we will communicate updates about our instructional models.

Thank you for your patience and partnership during this time and please stay safe.

Counseling Groups @ West

The Counseling Center will be offering student counseling groups during the 2nd marking period. All groups will be created based on the information gathered from our student needs survey that will be shared with students next week. Parents are also encouraged to refer their children to any of the counseling groups listed below by contacting William Montgomery (wmontgomery@pvsd.org)

SAFE Collective provides a judgement free space for students to have open discussions regarding race, gender expression, ability, and shape. From there we are developing actionable solutions and restorative justice practices to create change.

  • Lunch Bunch Friendship Group - (During lunch on Mondays and Fridays) for all students maintaining friendships while we are socially distancing at school and virtually. This will be an in-person group only.

  • Executive Functioning/Study Skills - (During Advisory on Tuesdays) for anyone who wants additional help organizing or studying.

Nurse Notes

Community Health and Dental in Pottstown can be utilized to receive free/reduced cost vaccines (if eligible). Their number is 610-326-9460.

Efforts to reduce the transmission of COVID-19 have led to many children not receiving routine preventative medical services. It is vital that all children receive recommended vaccinations on time and get caught up if they are behind as a result of the pandemic. Routine vaccination prevents illnesses that lead to unnecessary medical visits, additional outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases, hospitalizations, and further strain on schools, families, and health care systems.

At this time, all Perkiomen Valley students must be compliant with the state vaccine mandates or risk exclusion to school on November 8, 2020. If your child requires vaccines, you have received an email communication from the nurse

Also, Mrs. Lind is accepting 6th grade physicals, and 7th grade dental exams. These forms can be turned in to the office, or scanned and emailed to Mrs. Lind at clind@pvsd.org. It is highly recommended that while having their 6th grade physical, your child should receive their Tdap and Meningitis vaccinations to avoid having to return prior to the start of 7th grade for these shots. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this, please don't hesitate to contact Mrs. Lind by calling 484-977-7210 extension 4.

Please stay healthy and well!

Middle School Winter Athletic Information

Online registration for the winter sports season is now open. Information on how to register can be found on the Athletic Department website. Student physicals must be dated June 1, 2020 or later.

The official start to the winter sports season is slated for Dec. 7 for middle school, however this date is certainly subject to change based on the conditions of the pandemic and orders issued by the Pioneer Athletic Conference, the PIAA, or the state.

Winter sports at the high school include boys and girls basketball, boys and girls swimming, wrestling and boys and girls winter track. At the middle school level, we offer boys and girls basketball and wrestling.

If your child participated in a sport this fall, registration is still needed for the winter season. You will need to log on to their profile in Planet High School, go to Athletic Forms, select a winter sport, and fill out Section 7: Re-Certification by Parent/Guardian(Winter). Once approved, forms will say "Complete", and the profile will read Athletic Forms: Approved.

PV Cares Holiday Drive

Perkiomen Valley School District is proud to support families in need this holiday season through the fifth annual PV Cares Holiday Drive, which will be held Nov. 16 through Dec. 11 at each school.

Toys and gift cards are being collected to support the Daily Bread Food Pantry and the PV Power Packs program, both of which are serving PV families during the holiday season.

Instead of providing a specific “wish list” this year for toys, the pantry is inviting donors to provide toys, gift cards, or books that are similar to what they would purchase for their own children. As an example, if you are the parent of a fourth-grade boy, consider donating a toy or book that your child would want to play with. The pantry’s goal is to provide every child with three toys and a book.

Donations can be dropped off at any school until Dec. 11 and placed in the large cans that will be located in the vestibule of each school’s main entrance. We thank you in advance for your generosity this holiday season.

If you are a family who is need of assistance this holiday season, bring this flyer to the Daily Bread Food Pantry or say you are with the “PV Cares” program. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, only one family member at a time may shop at the pantry starting Wednesday, Nov. 25, between these hours:

Wednesdays: 9 to 11 a.m.

Thursdays: 6 to 8 p.m.

Saturdays: 9 to 11 a.m.

Daily Bread is located at 3938 Ridge Pike, Collegeville, PA 19426. PV Power Packs families may also reach out with requests to powerpacks@pvsd.org by Dec. 4.

American Education Week

American Education Week is celebrated the week before Thanksgiving and exists to celebrate the “team of people who work in our nation’s public schools.” This year, we’re taking a different approach to celebrating this important week since we aren't permitting visitors in our schools currently. With that in mind, we’d like to celebrate the different members of our team each day through a virtual spirit week. Whether your child is in school or attending remotely, take a photo of you or your child participating in the day and send it to jlester@pvsd.org for sharing on social media. We look forward to seeing what you send!

Monday, Nov. 16: TEAM HEALTHY

Honor our Food Service Department employees who provide us with nutritious meals by eating your fruits and veggies or wearing something food-related.

Wear orange and brown to show your support for the maintenance and custodial workers who do so much to keep our buildings safe and clean! We also recognize our bus drivers who work diligently to safely transport our students to and from school each day.

Wednesday, Nov. 18: TEAM LEARN

Write a note to your teacher telling him/her one thing you’ve learned this year or appreciated about your class!

Thursday, Nov. 19: TEAM COACHES

Break out your Viking apparel to support the administrators of our district who are helping lead us through uncharted territory.

Wave your pom poms or make a sign to thank the secretaries and paraprofessionals who provide the support and positive attitude we need so much in this unusual year!

Another part of American Education Week will be "pop-up" visits by administrators who will teach certain classes for a day. Don't be surprised if your child receives a lesson from someone on the administrative team next week!

Technology Help

It is expected that students come to school with a fully charged Chromebook. Students need to bring their Chromebook and charger to school every day. Students will be able to charge their Chromebook at designated times during the school day if it is running low on power.
