A Message from the Principal
Greetings,
This month we are focusing on kindness with students and staff. Our Student Council has challenged us to “Fill Our Hearts With Kindness”. We have been challenged to fill a giant paper heart outside the cafeteria with acts of kindness. On Wednesday at 2:30, we celebrated our almost FULL box of “I Got Caught” cards by taking a moment to Drop Everything and Show the Love. I asked students over the intercom to stop what they were doing and give each other a compliment. Mrs. Lee and Mr. Stipe modeled this the day before on announcements. It’s amazing how many smiles and giggles there were during this one small moment of our week. I encourage all of you to do this once a week at dinner too! Tell your child something you love and appreciate about him/her. Here is an article that was shared with me earlier this week. It talks about how our brains are wired to remember negative experiences, and we have to purposefully make the effort to create more positive memories. I’ve caught myself thinking about it a couple times this week, perhaps you will do the same. Here is the link if you’d like to read more about our ideas: https://www.mindfulschools.org/inspiration/tip-the-scale-of-negativity-bias-3-kindness-practices-for-your-school/
Sincerely,
Nikki Harrison

A Message from Your School Counselor
This week was National School Counselor Week! I am privileged to work in a building where my role is valued and supported. As a result, I am able to offer many resources and services to our students and parents. Visit my website by going to www.avon-schools.org, clicking on our school and going to the Counselors’ page. There you will find descriptions of many of my services, including the lending library, where you can borrow books on many topics, including parenting, ADHD and positive racial identity development.
The latest edition of 60 Seconds with Samide is available here or on my webpage.

A Message from Mrs. Kendall, Title 1/EL Teacher
Dear Families,
I would like thank everyone for attending our Winter Formal. It was great seeing many of our Maple families showing off their best dance moves!
We have a unique opportunity for families to enjoy reading together and engaging in their child’s literacy development while reading in their native language. As of right now, we have books in Amharic, Punjabi, Spanish and Vietnamese. If you are interested in borrowing one of these books, please send me an email for more information.
Sincerely,
Yael Kendall

Yearbook Sales
Don’t forget to order your child’s yearbook before 2/22/2019.
We do not order extras for sale. They do give us a few run off ones that are first come first serve. Don’t miss out on the 18-19 school year memories.
