How the World Works
Central Idea: Energy is detected through various senses
Lines of Inquiry:
-Blocking a light source causes a shadow
-Magnets have multiple uses
-Sound can change based upon the need
Teacher goals for students’ learning:
-Students will learn that sounds can change (vibration and pitch)
-Students will learn that emergency sounds help us.
-Students will learn about how a magnet attracts and repels objects.
-Students will learn about various sources of light (natural or man-made).
-Students will learn that blocking light can cause shadows.
How can you help at home?
-Allow your child to play the game: http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/gamesactivities/detectivescience/magnets.html
- Encourage your child to play with objects to make musical instruments.
-Encourage your child to use a flashlight to see what shadows various objects can make.
Helpful Hints for IB units
We are so excited to start our NEW IB unit. In this unit we will be focusing on light, shadows, sound, and magnets. This week, our focus will be on light and shadows. With your help, allow your child to experiment with a flashlight or lamp and various objects to produce shadows. Encourage your child to share what they think is causing the shadows to look different.
Biblionasium
As we head towards the end of the school year- please remember that continuing to practice reading and math facts is crucial to building your child’s academic strength. As you and your child read, remember to log your minutes in Biblionasium. Mrs. Crosby always recognizes those students who log their 600 monthly minutes! Raz-Kids is also available for your child. Prodigy is a great math program to practice their math fluency. Thank you!!
Curriculum Corner
Ask me what I’m learning!
Math- How do I describe shapes?
Writing- How do I use what I know to write narrative, informational, and opinion writing pieces?
Daily 5/Language Arts- How do I make connections in informational texts?
Phonics- What are the long vowel patterns?
IB Unit: Energy is detected through various senses.
Writing Conventions: How do I use conjunctions in my writing?
Encourage your child to be an inquirer by visiting the library and finding books that are on the topic your child is interested in. For example, if your child is interested in animals, encourage them to find informational/non-fiction books on the types of animals they are interested in.
The more you model how to be an inquirer, the more your child will exhibit these skills.
