Alice Newton Park
An easy hike to a waterfall in Woodbridge, CT
How long is the walk?
About 1.5 miles roundtrip if you do the blue trail from the parking lot to the waterfall and back. There are lots of other well marked trails to make a longer loop!
Some notes from my family's experience:
This is a very accessible adventure for kids of all ages. The blue trail is wide and mostly flat and it is impossible to get lost, just keep going until you reach the waterfall! The trail is gravel in some places and dirt in others.
A big attraction of this hike is all of the bridges, which my boys love. There are big bridges and several small foot bridges. We often stop to play at the bridges!
Stroller friendly? Sort of. You could push a jogging stroller on the blue trail to the waterfall, but there are several bridge crossings where you'll want another person to help lift the stroller up a step or two, and some pretty bumpy sections of roots across the trail as you get near the waterfall.
The blue trail continues past the falls but does NOT make a loop. If you turn right at the falls and follow the water/blue trail for a bit, you'll then want to backtrack or look at the park map to make a loop.
Because water is a big attraction on this adventure, I usually have my boys wear rain boots and rain pants so they can do some wading and exploring.
The gravel that is trucked in and dumped on the blue trail is full of mica! Look carefully for large and small flakes of this beautiful mineral.
