Updates on PowerSchool Changes
April 17, 2020
Update
Dear Scholars, Parents, and Guardians,
CCSMS is responsible for following the directives of the State Department of Education (SDE) and Charleston County School District (CCSD) in regards to grading expectations during the current school closure. As such, we have begun to implement the following grading practices for second semester:
- Scholars will receive one combined final second semester numeric grade that will consist of a combination of students' in-school grades prior to school closing (Quarter 3 and the start of Quarter 4 at CCSMS) and the assignments completed during this eLearning period.
- No final exams or EOCs will be administered for second semester courses.
Beginning on Wednesday, April 15th, major shifts began taking place in PowerSchool and teachers’ gradebooks to align with these directives. Please be patient as the changes are made, teachers adjust the weightings of individual assignments, and PowerSchool shifts the overall weighting for Quarter 3 to represent scholar mastery of course content over all of Semester 2 (January-June). We are working to ensure all changes made to scholar grades are reasonable, fair, and representative of the efforts each scholar is making. We always keep the best interest of our scholars at the forefront of our decision-making process.
Please find the appropriate grade level of your scholar(s) below for a detailed description of how grades will be calculated for the spring of 2020.
Middle School (6th-8th)
Year Long Core Courses
- Q1 - 25%, Q2 - 25%, Q3 - 50%
Second Semester Elective Courses
- Q3 - 100%
8th graders taking High School courses (Biology, English 1, Spanish, Geometry, Algebra 1)
- Q1 - 25%, Q2 - 25%, Q3 - 50%
- No final exam or EOC will be taken or calculated into the final grade
High school (9th-12th)
Second Semester Courses
- Full Credit Course - Q3 - 100%
- Half Credit Course Q3 - Government course only - final grade completed in traditional Quarter 3 has been recorded and remains unaffected by changes.
- Half Credit Course Q4 - Economics course only - Quarter 4 grade will be calculated traditionally except there will not be a final exam.
Thank you again for your patience with this process. We will let you know once the majority of the re-coding and re-weighting is complete. If you see inconsistencies or errors at that point we will have a process in place to review and adjust as needed.
Sincerely,
CCSMS Administrative Team
