New Global Studies Program Hosts Successful Gala
On Thursday, November 2, Monomoy Global Studies hosted our first annual Gala Auction at Wequassett Inn. The event was a great success as more than 50 people attended, and more than $13,000 was raised. The event featured a variety of food and dessert served by the Inn, a presentation on the new Global Studies Program and Service Trip, and a live and silent auction. Items were donated by the Wayside Inn, Cape Air, the Top Mast Resort, Mermaids on Main, Dolphin Fleet Whale Watch, Bistro on Main, the 1620 Brewhouse, the Cape Codder Resort, Sativa, Hart Farm, Pleasant Bay Community Boating, Creighton Morris, Paul Drake, Kat Szmit, Donna Daley, Ms. Waystack, and Mr. Dickson. The funds raised will defray the costs of the 18 students attending the first Global Studies Service Trip to the Dominican Republic in February. Thank you to all the students and parents for helping to organize the event, and especially to the generous donors who attended the event. It was a fabulous event, don’t miss the second annual gala next fall! -John Dickson, Director of Global Studies
And thank you to Mr. Dickson for making this happen!
BOG TO TABLE DINNER
The Key Club hosted a "Bog to Table" dinner for the Lower Cape Cod Kiwanis Club on Thursday, November 30th. It was a wonderful night and it was wonderful to spend time with the Kiwanis members who support the Monomoy Key Club. We are so thankful for their support!
Thank you to the Hall Family of Harwich for donating their home-grown, beautiful cranberries for our dinner event with the MRHS Key Club and the Kiwanis of Lower Cape Cod. Sportsmanship Summit 2017 at Gillette Stadium
A team leader from each of the winter sports along with our three MIAA Student Ambassadors attended the MIAA sportsmanship summit at Gillette Stadium on November 17th. The students spent the day working in small groups as well as listening to guest speakers regarding sportsmanship, leadership and what it means to be a strong leader. The highlight of the day for them was listening to guest speaker, Mike Smith, discuss his desire to give back from the time he was in college. It was a powerful presentation that made our student athletes think about ways in which they can positively affect change in our community.

Animal Care Coordinator Visits & Educates Monomoy Students
Just before Thanksgiving the animal care coordinator of Wild Care in Eastham, Jennifer Taylor, visited with students in the Animal Welfare Club (and some staff) at Monomoy Regional High School. She explained the unique care they provide to help wild animals on Cape Cod! Students were able to touch a 25 year old box turtle and view an eight month old screech owl while Jennifer told the stories of why these two animals cannot
be released back into the wild.
* Did you know there is an App you can load onto your smart phone that brings up the nearest wild animal rescue centers and certified animal rescuers? If you find an injured or abandoned wild animal ANYWHERE you can use this App to locate help!
Go to wildcarecapecod.org to learn about helping wildlife and especially what items Wild Care needs daily to save animals! Drop off any number of items from their WILD CARE WISH LIST! Call them at 508-240-2255 for more information! Gift cards at places like Staples, Amazon, Agway, Goose Hummock, and supermarkets are always needed! Did you know that unflavored pediatric electrolytes like Pedialyte are used often to the lives of animals? Frozen fruits like Wyman’s blueberries, raspberries etc. and electric heating pads (that do not turn themselves off) are just a few of their needs! Wild Care cannot operate without the donations they receive from the public! PLEASE consider any small or large donation to Wild Care during this giving season!
Thank you!

Monomoy Adopted Pet of the Week! *pictured below
Approximately 7.6 million companion animals (pets) enter animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.9 million are dogs and 3.4 million are cats. The Monomoy Animal Welfare Club encourages adopting instead of shopping for a pet so that we can decrease the number (millions) of pets killed in shelters every year in the USA.
Our adopted Monomoy pet of the week belongs to Mr. Jonathan Bennett, Guidance Counselor, and here is what he says about his cat, Betty:
Hello, my name is Betty! Like my dad, I like to read the paper and play with baskets. Dad adopted me as a tiny kitten (see my photos) from a litter of rescued kittens at the MSPCA in Centerville, MA. I will be two years old in June!
Abby Kelley Makes a Giving Tree for students to stop by guidance and pick the thoughtful gifts to lift you up!
The Harwich PTO is looking for volunteers for its annual Holiday Bazaar on Saturday from 9-11 am at Harwich Elementary School. Volunteers are needed to help the younger children shop and to wrap gifts. Thank you!!
Spirit Club Spreading a Positive Message!
Our wonderful Spirit Club had a great idea to spread the message of giving thanks during the week of Thanksgiving. Students and staff could stop by a table thick with sticky notes and markers and write something they were thankful for at MRHS. The wall soon filled up (see pick below). So much to be thankful for at MRHS- thank you Spirit Club!
Visit to the JFK Library & Museum
On Monday 11/20/17 the Kennedy Years class & the AP US II class traveled to Boston to visit the John F. Kennedy Library & Museum.
The purpose of the visit was to participate in the "Cold War Heats Up" program. The program includes an engaging discussion and overview on the Cold War, an informative video the Cuban Missile Crisis, as well as a guided tour of the museum which is home to so many interesting artifacts from JFK's administration, including the space capsule from the Freedom 7 mission which was in orbit over 100 miles above the Earth back in May of 1961!
The trip will not only be a valuable reference point for discussions for the rest of the year but was also a tremendous shared experience for all those in attendance.
