The Media

and Its True Effects

What is Media Literacy

What is the media? The media is any form of information that is released to the public. The most prevalent form of the media is the news. In some way or another, a majority of people like to know what’s going on in the world. Often companies will also use media as a form of advertisement. Media literacy is the understanding of the media that we see. Those who are “media literate” generally have a better understanding of things like the news and social media. Social media is among the most popular form of media. Social media sites such as Facebook and twitter use a personalized webpage in order to connect with people around the world. To the average user they are great tools for getting in touch with friends. For someone who is media literate it is a very powerful tool. They can use it to do basic research on someone and even use these pages to find out everything about a complete stranger. Companies will also hire someone who is media literate to look thru potential employees pages. That is the reason why you should always be careful of the things you post. Anything you post is up forever even if you delete it. For many people a post that the put out in high school has cost them a job because there employer found the post. In summary, the media is a very powerful tool that can be used for talking to friends as well as stealing someone’s identity. Being media literate is what determines what side of that you are on.

Jaguar 2014 Big Game Commercial | British Villains 'Rendezvous' | Jaguar USA

Precis

Jaguar in the commercial “British Villain Rendezvous” (2014) illustrates the fact that the new F-Type Coupe is built with a British villain’s personality. Jaguar supports its claim by comparing the cars “personality” to common British villains such as Ben Kingsley and Tom Hiddleston who commonly play villains. Jaguar uses these common villain actors to help convey the idea that the F-Type Coupe is the British villain of cars in order to prove that Jaguar can still make a competitive sports car. Jaguar uses a very formal tone in order to reach out to its target audience which is the upper class male who is over the age of 40.

1984 Theme song

“Savior” by Rise Against would be an excellent theme song for the movie 1984. The song is about a fighting to keep life the way it is in a rapid changing world and how the only way to do that is to focus on you. This is a great song because it also expresses that when all of your days are the same, they begin to drag on and feel like forever. Winston feels the same way until he meets Julia. The song also relates to Winston by saying “It kills me not to know this but I've all but just forgotten. What the color of her eyes were and her scars or how she got them. As the telling signs of age rain down, a single tear is dropping. Through the valleys of an aging face that this world has forgotten.” This perfectly reflects how Winston feels towards Julia. He doesn’t care how it happens, but all he wants is to be with her.

Lyrics

It kills me not to know this but I've all but just forgotten
what the color of her eyes were and her scars or how she got them
as the telling signs of age rain down a single tear is dropping
through the valleys of an aging face that this world has forgotten

there is no reconciliation that will put me in my place
and there is no time like the present to drink these draining seconds
but seldom do these words ring true when I'm constantly failing you
like walls that we just can't break through until we disappear
so tell me now

if this ain't love then how do we get out?
because I don't know
that's when she said I don't hate you boy
I just want to save you while there's still something left to save
that's when I told her I love you girl
but I'm not the answer to the questions that you still have

but the day pressed on like crushing weights
for no man does it ever wait
like memories of dying days
that deafen us like hurricanes
bathed in flames we held the brand
uncurled the fingers in your hand
pressed into the flesh like sand
now do you understand?
so tell me now

if this ain't love then how do we get out?
because I don't know
that' s when she said I don't hate you boy
I just want to save you while there's still something left to save
that's when I told her I love you girl
but I'm not the answer to the questions that you still have

one thousand miles away
there's nothing left to say
but so much left that I don't know
we never had a choice
this world is too much noise
it takes me under
it takes me under once again

I don't hate you
I don't hate you
so tell me now
if this ain't love then how do we get out?
because I don't know

that's when she said I don't hate you boy
I just want to save you while there's still something left to save
that's when I told her I love you girl
but I'm not the answer to the questions that you still have
I don't hate you
I don't hate you, no

Final Review

This class has strongly affected my view on the media and everything that surrounds the media. At the beginning of this semester I thought I knew everything there is to know about media and social media. I could not have been more wrong. At the beginning of the semester I thought media literacy just understanding what the media is telling us. As it turns out, media literacy is so much more than that. I now know how to find the real meaning in an article and determine if an article is biased or not. The main thing that I am taking away from this class is how careful you have to be with social media. I always knew they were dangerous, but I never really understood how. This is by far the most different language arts class I’ve taken. Most language arts classes focus on grammar. This class teaches us about the world and how everything around us affects our decisions. I never would have thought that a language arts class would change my life completely. This class changes the way we think. Before this class I would see and advertisement and not think twice about it. Now when I see one I stop and look at it and try to figure out every little detail about it. I now think twice about everything I post. Without this class I would never do that. There are really only a few ways to make this class better. One way would to make the class focus more on media instead of having to spend time reading books in class. The final way to make this class better is to have a little more time for each assignment.
