IMPORTANT TO DO
Please review the FAQ for collaboration time.
The preparation of materials such as photocopying, laminating, cutting, etc. is not an appropriate use of collaboration time. Here is the FAQ with the "do's and don'ts" of collaboration time on the first two pages. A good rule of thumb: To be collaborating you must be: thinking, analyzing, planning, talking working and writing together in the same space at the same time.
The FAQ document can also be used to guide your LT Time. Documentation of agenda and work completed during LT will begin to be recorded after the new year. I will add it to our current PD spreadsheet document for quick and easy access.
Facilitators
Please send agenda (or google doc link) to Kalay each Monday or add it to the PD planning spreadsheet
Classified & Specialist
Please communicate your weekly collaboration agenda/topic in the PD spreadsheet (see button to link below).
Lewis and Clark Grad Student Visit
On Tuesday, December 20, we will have an elementary education grad student visiting classrooms by the name of Sean Powell. Please let me know if you are willing to have him visit your class. Volunteer time/content link. Thank you.
SCHOOL NEWS
Security Reminder
Remember your classroom door is to be locked at all times. Place your magnetic strip or foam animal on the door for easy in and out, and to prevent the door from locking. Anytime that you leave your classroom, the door is to be locked, this includes leaving at the end of the day. The production room, book room and storage room will remain unlocked for access after school hours.
Holiday Staff Party
Becky has offered her home for our holiday party on Thursday, December 14th. Please look for details to follow .
Staff Absences on Early Release Wednesdays must be reported in Absence Management for the full amount of hours not worked, regardless of whether or not students are present. Sub jobs always stop at 2:05, for classified and certified employees.
Paved Path
The PTC has officially voted to move forward to begin fundraising for a Paved Path. The goal is to raise approximately $ 175,000. It is very intentional that we would like to call it the "Paved Path" because we are not planning to duplicate Catlin Gabel's track. There must not be any misconceptions that we are going for that level. Ours will be about 7 feet wide, 800 feet in length and will likely be just a plain asphalt surface. A rubberized topper is about 30-40 thousand more dollars.
Pictures of MUDDY kids
I am making a auction slideshow presentation in support of a future paved path. Since the rain is here that will mean muddy kids if you use the bark-chip path. Take pictures of your muddy students, shoes, the floor, your carpets, etc. Whatever is muddy I will take! Thanks!
Auction TICKETS
You should have received a free auction ticket flyer in your mailbox from the PTC. Parents love to see staff attend. Send an email to westtvauction@gmail.com to claim and register your ticket. Visit: http://tiny.cc/WTV2018 to purchase additional tickets. Each ticket is 80 dollars. Ticket sales cover the auction venue, dinner and auctioneer fees and DO NOT actually raise any money for the PTC.
Auction Party
Consider contributing to the fund raising by throwing an easy auction event or party. Popular events are something like "Popsicles on the Playground" with Mrs. Smith on Friday, May 4th from 3:05-4:00, 15 students. In the past we have had gym games, art/crafts, baking parties, kickball games and many more. I'm going to do a weekend kid movie and principal for a 1/2 day. Holding an auction party is not an expectation! However, the positive contribution and connection with our parents and students pays huge dividends.
Hour of Code
Student Action - Global Citizens
The students learned that through Unicef the donations they collected would be used to give families clean drinking water, provide mosquito nets to protect children from malaria, buy "therapeutic food" for malnourished children, and could even buy a "school-in-a-box" which will help forty refugee children learn and heal.
Congratulations to the third graders! Together, they collected $485.68 for Unicef. By collecting money and donating it to Unicef the students from West TV showed empathy and kindness for other children around the world. They also took part in a significant action cycle which includes reflection and the conscious choice to respond to their learning.
DISTRICT NEWS
Calling 911
All staff should be empowered to call 911 whenever necessary. Staff do not need to call the Main Office prior to calling 911. Staff should notify the Main Office after calling 911 so the office is informed.
“Turn your key, be idle free!”
Campaign coming soon to your school!
The Communications & Community Involvement Dept. is working on a campaign to reduce vehicle idling on District property. The campaign will kick off in late January and will include a poster contest for students.
Please be on the lookout for a “toolkit” of materials to help incorporate the campaign into your school environment. We plan to have a full complement of tools sent out to schools in mid-January.
Firewall Upgrade
We will be installing larger/upgraded firewalls over the winter break. All systems and network connections will be affected.
Assessing the Impact of Immigration Enforcement Policies on Teaching & Learning
BSD is partnering with the UCLA's Civil Rights Project to understand the impact of immigration enforcement policies on teaching and learning in our nation's public schools. Please participate in a nation-wide quick (5-minute), voluntary survey to share your experience and perspective during the non-instructional time. Findings of this survey will inform an immigration policy dialogue at the national level, primarily with the Congress. Please see attached letter from UCLA if you would like more information about this survey.
Balancing the Holidays in Your Building/Classroom
Providing an inclusive learning environment is critical to empowering all students for post-high school success. Beaverton is a diverse school district where students bring in multiple life experiences into our classrooms. With such diversity, we have a unique opportunity and responsibility to balance the holidays to create an inclusive environment, especially in the coming months where certain religious holidays are traditionally highlighted. It is the policy of the BSD that the district should encourage all students and staff to appreciate and respect each other’s views. It is important that all educators embrace the diversity of cultural backgrounds and religious beliefs in our schools and society. Special care must be taken to ensure that students do not experience exclusionary feeling and can participate comfortably in school programs, displays, performances, classroom activities and/or celebrations. Classroom parties and celebrations held at a holiday time must be secular in nature and their overall effect should not promote or favor any religious practice, belief or non-belief. Please review the following policy, AR, and "Things to Think About" as you balance the holidays in your classroom/building
