Here's the scoop!

We are off to a great start! Finishing our fourth week of kindergarten has been a blink of the eye. Our schedule has become more routine by the day. We have been busy bees in room 18!

Language Arts

Language Arts Rotations

We are perfecting our language arts rotations as we complete some of these tasks each day:

Library

ABC center

Work on writing

Read to someone

Pocket charts

Listening center

Word work

Read to self

Writing center

Computers

On Monday, we will implement a teacher table and "must-do" activity as independent seat work in addition to their centers. I will begin small group reading during teacher table time. More details and pictures to follow.

Tadpole words

We will begin our tadpole word program next week. Knowing high frequency words or no-excuuse words in our reading improves fluency. There are many words (e.g. a, we, can, the, etc.) we should recognize on-sight without sounding out. Through tadpole words we hope to improve the automaticity of word recognition which will improve their reading.

Math

Number sense / cardinality

We have been learning to recognize and write our numbers from one to ten. We take as many opportunities to, "show me, don't tell me" the number of items in stories and projects we work on. This is something you can do with them at home, as well. I'll ask them a question and they have to give me the answer using their fingers. Numbers are all around us and I encourage you to have them count as frequently as possible. You can ask them to count objects independently using their hands and use words to describe them, or count together. Have fun with it!

Science

Room 18, garden, and science lab

We explore science daily through our reading and writing. Our focus has been on: Family (Unit 1 of our language arts). We have explored how not only humans, but animals have families. We have read all about the relationships between animals and their babies.

We have visited Mr. Girod for our first time on wheel and we did scavenger hunts in the science lab and our garden!

Social Studies

Good citizen

We are learning how we act in certain ways at home, in school and our community.

Extra, Extra! Read All About It!

This month has been full of new routines, teachers, and friends! We can officially celebrate our first month of kindergarten :) With every day we are learning more about ourselves and the world around us. We are an inquisitive bunch that strives to be the best we can be! Please look for an email from Monica Stapleton (our room mom) with important volunteer reminders. Looking forward to see some of you next week!
