Second Grade Scoop
Miss Roberts * Stoy School * August
Welcome
Summer is flying by and the new school year is just a week way. I am excited to begin Second Grade with everyone on September 4th. Stoy School is a nurturing environment that sets the bar high and supports its students academically, socially, and emotionally. I am looking forward to working with familiar families and many new ones. Here's the "Scoop" on myself and 2R.
This is my 20th year teaching in Haddon Township and my 19th year at Stoy School. During my first 10 years I taught half-day kindergarten and was the school Literacy Facilitator and Reading Recovery teacher. I am fortunate to be teaching Second Grade since 2010.
Throughout the school year, my goal is to email the "Second Grade Scoop" to families and post it on my website at the beginning of each week. It will inform you of topics the students will focus on each week and will keep you up to date on life in 2R. I hope it will help extend the school conversation you have with your child at home. Please help me welcome our new Second Grade friend, Kayci Koelsch and her family, to Stoy School. We am happy to have her in our class. As you prepare to send your child off to school, it is important to know that our air conditioning works well and our classroom can get chilly. It is a good idea to have your second grader back a light sweatshirt each day, just in case.
Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have. You may call the main office at 869-7725 and leave a voicemail at ext. 5022, or email me at lroberts@htsd.us.

General Information
School Supplies:
Your child is welcome to visit our classroom on Tuesday, August 27th to say "Hello!" and drop your his/her supplies. If you are unavailable, your Second Grader may bring their supplies on the first day of school. A supply list was given at the end of the year. If you did not receive one, it can be found on the school website; press the Wednesdsay Folder Stoy Announcements tab on the left.
Student Agendas:
On the first day of school, each child will receive an Agenda Book which will serve dual purposes. The students will primarily use the book to document homework assignments and write their Word Study words. You and I can use it to communicate daily notes or reminders. I will sign the agendas each day and respond as necessary. Please be sure your child returns his/her Agenda each day.
Home Folders
A durable, red folder will also be sent home on the first day of school. It will be used as the primary take-home folder. Please look inside the folder each night and remove or return papers as necessary. Please be sure your child returns his/her folder each day.
Daily Reading
Reading is paramount in Second Grade. Students are responsible for reading at least 10-15 minutes every night. Beginning in October, the boys and girls will have a written response assigned every other week and will be able to complete their response using a book of their choice from those they have read during the week. Additional information will be provided at Back to School Night.
Birthday Celebrations
Birthdays are important, and we will celebrate them with the creation of a Birthday Book for each child on his/her special day. Since birthday snacks are not permitted in school, as per district policy, students may bring in their favorite picture book to read aloud to the class. If your child has a summer birthday, we will celebrate a "half" birthday during the school year.
