Allergy Awareness Week
Food Allergy Awareness Week provides a unique opportunity to help raise awareness of food allergies and anaphylaxis. A food allergy is a medical condition in which exposure to a food triggers a harmful immune response. There is no cure for food allergies. Instead, they are managed by avoiding the problem food(s), learning to recognize symptoms of reactions and receiving appropriate treatment. During announcements, students heard an interesting fact or two about food allergies.
Seasonal Allergies: Mrs. Parke
Allergic rhinitis symptoms occur during certain times of the year, usually when outdoor molds release their spores, and trees, grasses, and weeds release tiny pollen particles into the air to fertilize other plants. Even kids and adults, who have never had seasonal allergies in years past can develop them.
Signs and Symptoms: usually come on suddenly and last as long as a person is exposed to the allergen, can include:
· itchy/tearing/reddened eyes
· nasal congestion/clear running nose/sneezing/itchy nose
· coughing
Diagnosis and Treatment: talk with your doctor if you think your child might have allergies. There are many ways to treat seasonal allergies, depending on how severe the symptoms are. It’s important to monitor the daily pollen count.
The Health Office monitors pollen counts and those students with moderate-severe seasonal allergies may stay indoors for recess.
