The Willis Weekly

A Note From Mr. Delp
As families, you can support your child in these two areas by:
- Talking to them about their school day, asking about their friends, and focusing on the things they have enjoyed.
- Helping them maintain a healthy perspective. Adolescents are naturally prone to mood swings and things can quickly become "the end of the world." When they are struggling with something, help your child keep a healthy perspective, assure them that there is a solution, and encourage them to seek assistance.
- Being on the lookout for small wins. I don't want to diminish the importance of grades, but junior high is more about learning the skills that will help students be successful in the future. Growth is the name of the game. Look for areas where you see your child improving and compliment them on it.
- Encouraging them to advocate for themselves. This can be a difficult skill for students and parents. If your child needs help with something, encourage them to ask -- raising their hand in class, taking time to visit with a teacher before (or after) class, seeking out the help of their counselor or an administrator. Asking for help is an important skill that all of us utilize.
I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to work with your child. It is truly a pleasure to interact with our students on a daily basis. Junior high can be a tough age, but we will get through it together!
Have a great weekend Firebirds!
