Liberty's Smore Newsletter

Welcome Liberty families to a new school year and a new set of Smore Newsletters. For our entering freshman families and our new to the District families, WELCOME TO LIBERTY. This newsletter is your opportunity to stay up-to-date on all things Liberty. This newsletter is collaborative in that I will rely heavily on staff, students, and families across our Liberty learning community to share information and happenings with me, so I then will be able to share important information and the neat things occurring across our school. During the summer it runs the first day of June and July. Beginning in August and running though May, it will be published during the first and third week of each month.

Return-to-Learn Update

The following Return-to-Learn update was sent to all District families on 9/11 by Interim Superintendent Matt Degner:

The District has continued to monitor the COVID-19 positivity rates in Johnson County. Based on a fourteen-day positivity rate of 20.4% as of Wednesday, September 9, and support from both Johnson County Public Health and our School Board, the District petitioned the State for permission to continue in a 100% off-site learning model for up to an additional two week period. Permission was granted from the State late yesterday.

The Board of Directors will discuss these developments and determine the next steps at a special Board Meeting to be held at 5:00 pm on Tuesday, September 15, 2020. At this time, no decision has been made to extend 100% off-site learning past September 22, 2020. The options will be reviewed and discussed during the special Board Meeting before an official decision is made. We will provide an update following the meeting that will detail the District's plan regarding any additional days of 100% off-site learning, the potential transition to the hybrid learning mode, and the return of in-person extracurricular activities.

The health of our students and staff remains the primary focus in our decision-making. We will provide an update following the Special Board meeting that will detail any decisions made during that meeting. Thank you for your continued support and understanding as we navigate this process. #ICCSDtogether

The Liberty Fund

As families at Liberty High School face challenges from COVID-19 to recent storm issues, the future of the academic environment has never felt so unpredictable. The Liberty Fund is so grateful for the community members who have funded and advocated for the students and staff at Liberty High School over the past few years. At a time when everything feels uncertain, we find encouragement knowing that Liberty families care about our mission of ensuring that students have access to a broad and rich learning experience and that all students have access to the opportunities at Liberty.

We know that now, more than ever, the Liberty community needs us. Some of those needs might look very different than they have over the past two years, and The Liberty Fund is committed to adapting to our changing reality. If you are in a position to make a gift or are looking for a way to help Liberty navigate these changes, please help us support Liberty students and staff. Summer Grab & Go Meal Service During the 20-21 School Year

We are excited to announce that the USDA has extended our waiver allowing us to continue to offer free meals to all students. The waiver has been extended through December 2020. While meals are currently free for all students through December under this waiver, it is critical that families still complete the Free and Reduced Lunch application since meals may not be free beginning in January 2021. The District provides free and reduced meals to families that qualify; however, you must fill out an application each year as federal income guidelines change. Please be aware that even if you applied last year, you need to reapply by September 30, 2020, to prevent a potential loss in benefits. If you have already filled out an application or have received a benefits notification from the District’s Nutrition Services Department for this year, NO additional action is necessary. Please contact the Nutrition Services Office at (319) 688-1021 if you have any questions about your student’s meal status or if you are unsure about whether an application is needed at this time.

The Grab & Go meal sites are outlined below. Meals are served from 11:30 am - 1:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Each meal includes breakfast and lunch. Menu information can be found at MealViewer, under the Grab & Go menu. Meals are free and available to all Iowa City Community School District students and children do not need to be present in order for a guardian to pick-up a meal for the child.

Grab & Go meal sites beginning September 8, 2020:

  • City High School
  • Hills Elementary School
  • Liberty High School
  • North Central Junior High School
  • Northwest Junior High School
  • South East Junior High School
  • West High School

Thank you again to our Nutrition Services team for their continued dedication to the students in our community. We will provide additional guidance for meal pick-up during the hybrid learning model prior to the District moving into that model. #ICCSDtogether
