School Supply List
Principal's Corner
As we close out the 2019-2020 school year, I would like to take the opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to all the amazing students, staff, and parents/guardians that made this year an extraordinary year. We faced many challenges and hurdles this spring, but we supported and helped one another through a very difficult time. We have worked extremely hard to bring pride and unity to Edison Middle School while building on previous accomplishments. The staff, teachers, custodians, café staff, educational assistants, clerical, nurse, counselors, and administration, as well as parents/guardians and students play a key role in making Edison the best school. We are so fortunate to have so many wonderful, caring people who are connected to Edison.
A special thank you to the Edison PTO. I know that I am not alone in saying that Edison has the best PTO not only in the city of Sioux Falls, but the state. The PTO consists of supportive, hard-working, and positive members who continually give their time, energy, and talents to make sure our students have the best educational experience. The Edison PTO has an incredible network of volunteers who are one of the many reasons that our PTO is so successful. To those involved in the PTO, thank you for being so committed and dedicated to not only your student, but all our students and staff.
Our student council, led by Sherri Sherard and Tanya Carlson, work tirelessly throughout the year to raise funds, provide food, clothes, and more for so many groups, organizations, and families in our community. They are teaching our students to be stewards of our community through teaching generosity, compassion, and selflessness, which are admirable qualities that make us proud.
Lastly, our students have worked so hard throughout the year to ensure they are making academic progress in all areas. They continue to make us proud with their ability to raise achievement, demonstrate compassion, and model what productive, quality citizens look like. Thank you to the 8th graders for leading the way and modeling for our 7th and 6th graders. We look forward to the 2020-2021 school year and to build on the successes of this year’s group of students.
Thank you again for all of your support throughout this school year. Edison would not be the amazing place it is without your support and dedication. I wish you a relaxing, enjoyable summer with family and friends. Take care!

High School Summer School
Registration is now open for High School Summer School.

Music Notes
To all of our middle school musicians~
We have missed making music with you! Have a terrific summer and we look forward to seeing you in the fall!
One of our band directors, Mr. Tim Eckart, will be serving as SFEA President during this upcoming school year. We will miss him and we wish him well in his new position! We welcome Holly Gage to our music department!
Here’s a message from Holly:
Hello Edison Students! My name is Mrs. Holly Gage and I am so excited to be your band teacher next year. Music has been a positive outlet for me my entire life, especially right now. I hope to pass my passion of music and learning on to you. I have been using this time at home to practice my trombone, spend time with my family, and move across the country. My family and I just moved back to South Dakota from Washington D.C. The picture included was taken in Shenandoah National Park during a hike we took last month. We also have a huge love of the Washington Nationals and hope that baseball season will come back soon. I look forward to working with you and learning from you this upcoming school year. Stay safe, and be kind!
Welcome 5th graders!!!!
We hope many of you 5th graders are signed up for BAND, CHORUS, and ORCHESTRA! These performance groups meet for one period every other day, during the school day. 5th graders can sign up for two of these groups in any combination: band/chorus, band/orchestra, or chorus/orchestra. If you sign up for one music group you will have Directed Studies on the opposite day. We hope you decide to participate in one or two of our music groups! Please contact any of the directors with questions. (Directors and their e-mails are listed below.)
Orchestra All State News~
The middle school all state orchestra audition music for next year (auditions will be in Oct and Nov) is out! It can be found on the SDMEA website, www.sdmea.net.
You may also join the google classroom that has been set up for all state. The class code is: pmhwp4x
Band News~
School-owned instruments - Current 6th and 7th grade students may be able to keep school-owned instruments over the summer IF you will for sure return to Edison next year and are signed up for band. Please check with Mr. Rygg.
Summer Band - Summer Youth Band Camp has been cancelled for the summer due to COVID-19. Hopefully it will be back in full swing in the summer of 2021!
Individual Lessons - Summer is a perfect time to start taking individual lessons on your instrument. Contact Mr. Rygg, or local music stores for lists of instrumental teachers. This is another great way to stay active in the summer, really excel on your instrument, and have more fun playing
All State Band - Tryouts for next year’s All State Band are in November, but summer is the best time to start working on the music. Keep an eye on http://www.sdmea.net/events/middle-school-all-state-ban/ and watch for updated information. Mr. Rygg has help tracks available for the etudes (they are hard!) so contact him if you want access to those help tracks.
Do You Like to Sing?~
If you wish to try chorus next year, it is not too late to sign up! Even if you were not in chorus as a 6th or 7th grader, you can try it for the first time next year! Contact Mrs. Weflen or Mrs. Sundvold if you have questions about chorus.
Private Lessons~
Now is a great time of year to consider starting private lessons on your instrument/voice. Individual lessons with a skilled teacher are a great way to learn, grow, and excel as a musician. The private lesson list can be found on the Edison Music Dept. website at http://emsmusicdept.weebly.com/private-instructors-list.html
Cleaning Your Closets?
The Sioux Falls School District is always on the lookout for donations of gently-used band and orchestra instruments. Given our funding challenges, this is a great way to increase our instrument supply and allow more students to play in band and orchestra. Please contact Mrs. Sip or Mr. Rygg for more information.
